MADISON, Wis. – After going 4-0 in a pair of doubleheaders against Green Bay and Illinois last week, the Wisconsin softball team continues its season hosting a three-game series against Purdue. The Badgers will play Friday at 5 p.m., Saturday at 4 p.m., and Sunday at 12 p.m.
Sunday's game will be the annual "Get to Goodman" game. As part of this Sunday Kids' Day event, presented by Kohl's, all youth and high school teams are eligible to receive free admission and all general public tickets are only $1!
Originally the Badgers were scheduled to play a doubleheader in Minnesota on Wednesday, but due to the snow that fell throughout the weekend that series has been postponed.
1. WATCH OUT FOR WYDERSKI: Senior Brooke Wyderski was on fire last week, collecting nine hits in 11 at-bats. She was a perfect 5-for-5 against Illinois while also drawing two intentional walks. Wyderski leads the team with 13 multiple-hit games and 17 doubles.
2. LOTS OF BASES: Second baseman Kelsey Jenkins extended her record-breaking reached base streak to 36 games last week while first baseman Lauren Foster has a 12-game reached base streak of her own. As a team, the Badgers racked up 35 hits and 23 walks against the Phoenix and Illini.
3. SWINGING FOR THE FENCES: Freshman Taylor Johnson and junior Stephanie Lombardo each homered in game two against Illinois. Johnson's was a leadoff home run to left center while Lombardo's was a three-run bomb to right center. The Badgers have homered 20 times this season, led by Wyderski with five dingers.
4. TEAMWORK: Wisconsin leads the Big Ten with 33 sacrifice bunts and is tied for the lead with 10 sacrifice flies. Gabby Scherle and Kelly Welsh each have team-high nine sac bunts while Wyderski and Johnson lead the team with three sac flies apiece.
5. SCOUTING PURDUE: The Boilermakers are 11-31 this season and 3-8 in Big Ten play. After games with Fort Wayne and Dayton on Tuesday and Wednesday, Purdue comes to Madison for a weekend series. Last week the Boilermakers split a doubleheader with Indiana State before dropping two conference games at Nebraska. Jenny Behan paces Purdue with 37 hits, 19 runs, 29 RBI and seven home runs.
