Freedom Run: Wisconsin rolls past Nebraska, 41-24

Taylor scores 3 TDs to extend Badgers win streak against Huskers

MADISON, Wis. — No. 16 Wisconsin's punishing ground game wore down winless Nebraska in a 41-24 victory on Saturday night at Camp Randall Stadium.

Jonathan Taylor ran for 221 yards and three scores, including a career-best 88-yarder in the fourth quarter to lead the Badgers and keep the Big Ten rivalry's Freedom Trophy here in Madison.

The victory extends Wisconsin's win streak vs. Nebraska to six consecutive games and own a 7-1 record since the Huskers joined the Big Ten in 2011. Wisconsin has won all 5 meetings between the teams since the introduction of the Freedom Trophy in 2014.

Wisconsin quarterback Alex Hornibrook hit TE Jake Ferguson on a 14-yard touchdown pass with 42 seconds remaining in the first half to claim a 20-3 lead.

Ahead by 17 points, the Badgers (4-1, 2-0 Big Ten) would shut down a second-half comeback attempt by the Cornhuskers courtesy of two touchdown passes in the third quarter by Nebraska's Adrian Martinez. The freshman quarterback threw for 384 yards and rushed for a score. JD Spielman had nine catches for 209 yards, including a 75-yard touchdown catch. But it still wasn't enough to prevent the Cornhuskers (0-5, 0-3) from losing their ninth straight game, extending a program record.

The disciplined Badgers took advantage of a Martinez fumble in the third quarter, a turnover that Wisconsin cashed in for a 20-yard touchdown run from Taiwan Deal for a 24-point lead with 6:50 left in the third quarter.

The Cornhuskers still kept attacking through the air and Martinez found Jack Stoll for a 12-yard touchdown pass with 4:20 left to get back within 17. Wisconsin linebacker T.J. Edwards, a preseason All-American, closed the door on the Huskers' comeback hopes. He had his second sack of the night on third-and-14 to force a punt.

Taylor barreled through the line on the next play from scrimmage before speeding away from a winded defense for his 88-yard score and a 41-17 lead with 12:50 left. Taylor finished with 24 carries. Alex Hornibrook was 13 of 24 for 163 yards and a score.

The Badgers gained 533 total yards, including 371 on the ground. Those are both the team's highest marks in a Big Ten game since gaining 627 total yards with 581 rushing vs. Nebraska on Nov. 15, 2014.

Senior runningback Taiwan Deal scored his 3rd touchdown of the season on a career-long run of 20 yards in the third quarter. He finished with season highs of 74 yards on 10 carries. Sophomore RB Garrett Groshek also carried nine times for a career-high 73 yards.

Wisconsin travels to play its third consecutive night game at No. 15 Michigan on Oct. 13.
