Badgers blank Korea in exhibition

Six different Badgers score Saturday night at LaBahn Arena

MADISON, Wis. -- Senior captain Claudia Kepler and sophomore Alexis Mauermann each scored two goals for the Wisconsin women's hockey team in its 8-0 exhibition triumph against the South Korea National Team on Saturday at LaBahn Arena.

Freshmen Brette Pettet, Delaney Drake and Caitlin Schneider and sophomore Presley Norby also contributed goals in the exhibition that occurred on the first official day of practice.

"I think we gained a lot of things," UW head coach Mark Johnson said. "Normally we have a Red-White scrimmage, but this is much better for us because you've got live competition. Korea has been together for three or four years and they play systems and understand how the game is played. That makes it better for us than what we can do in practice. So with a young team, we've got 16 freshmen and sophomores, to do that is much better than to scrimmage against ourselves."

Kepler, a Verona, Wisconsin native, also recorded four shots in her first career game for Wisconsin. The senior transferred from Ohio State, and will play her final collegiate season as a Badger.

"It was a childhood dream come true honestly," Kepler, one of UW's two captains this year, said. "I grew up as a Badger fan. Before warm up started I saw every member from my family walk in, so that was pretty cool."

Nine Badgers, including senior co-captain Baylee Wellhausen, recorded assists for Wisconsin, and junior assistant captain Sophia Shaver led the team with seven shots on goal.

Sophomores Kristen Campbell and Alyson Baldwin and freshman Breanna Blesi all saw time between the pipes for Wisconsin, combining for five total saves.

"We just decided to play one each period and get them exposed," Johnson said. "We wanted to get them all three feeling what it is to come on the ice, playing in front of a crowd."

The Badgers, who are slated to place second in the WCHA, dominated South Korea on the final third of the ice, outshooting the Koreans 60 to five.

After the game, Korea won a planned shootout, 2-1, after six rounds.

The Badgers continue their season next weekend, taking on Lindenwood in a two-game series at LaBahn Arena. Puck drop on Friday is set for 7 p.m. while Saturday's game starts at 3 p.m.
