TUCSON, Ariz. – Senior Lorenzo Larry led the Wisconsin men's track and field team with another show-stopping performance at the Jim Click Shootout in Tucson, Arizona, on Saturday.
The senior won the 100 meters with a time of 10.34 seconds, placing him seventh all-time in program history. Saturday's triumph marked his 11th victory of the 2017 track season to go along with his third-straight win in the 100 meters.
"That was a great run by Lorenzo," UW Director of Track and Field Mick Byrne said. "That was a stacked field, and he went out and came away with the win and a personal best."
Following his fantastic performance in the 100, Larry wound up notching a fourth-place run in the 200 meters with a time of 20.91.
Over in the discus, junior Josh McDonald also provided a performance for the Badgers history books during his third-place finish. With a distance of 189 feet, 11 inches, McDonald moved into third-place all-time with his toss at the Roy P. Drachman Stadium.
"Great effort by Josh," Byrne said. "He ended his season last year with an appearance at the NCAA championships so to see him pick up where he left off was fantastic."
Teammate Riley Budde came in fifth in the event with a throw of 178-3 1/4.
Earlier in the day, Budde also put together his own record-setting presentation. A mark of 215-4 in the hammer throw gave him a second-place finish for the day, but also vaulted him past his old previous best of 210-3. With this result, Budde remains third on the UW all-time list, trailing only All-Americans Michael Lihrman and Scott Erickson.
"Another big day for Riley," Byrne said. "He helped set the tone for the team with his great effort in the hammer throw."
Sophomore Eric Brown dominated in the 800 meters, earning a personal best of 1:49.14 to win the event. Cooper Barth took seventh with a time of 1:54.02.
In the 1500 meters, freshman Oliver Hoare continued his good form with a victory. Hoare finished well ahead of the field with a time of 3:52.54, almost four seconds ahead of the next competitor. Senior McKena Ramos placed seventh in the event with a run of 4:01.42.
Over in the pole vault, the Badgers finished first and second with stellar performances from freshman Rashid Coulibaly and junior Tim Guthrie, respectively. Coulibaly earned the victory with a clearance of 16-1 1/4, while Guthrie also cleared 16-1 1/4.
Troy Smith and Tyson Miehe put together quality runs in the 3000 meters, finishing second and third, respectively. Smith earned a time of 8:54.52 while Miehe finished in 9:04.87.
Ryan Davis added a personal record to his name on Saturday with a sixth-place finish in the 400 meters in 47.13.
Budde and McDonald also competed in the shot put, finishing fourth and sixth, respectively. Budde recorded a throw of 58-9 1/2 while McDonald hit a mark of 56-4 1/4.
Back on the track, freshman Travis Toliver paced three Badgers in the 110 hurdles with a third-place finish and a time of 15.52. Following Toliver was Paul Afflitto and John Cioffredi in fourth and fifth, respectively.
The 4x100-meter relay team composed of Corbin Ellis, Alex Teague, James Stecker and Larry notched fifth-place with a run of 40.51.
Freshman Isaac Hale opened up his outdoor competition with a seventh-place finish in the high jump at 6-4 3/4.
Fellow freshman and walk-on Ryan Dundun delivered his own impressive performance, finishing sixth in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 53.81.
Wisconsin finished third in the team standings with 103 points. Big Ten rival Iowa won the meet with 179 points.
"Having a team score is great as it makes the meet meaningful," Byrne said. "Ultimately, we fell short to Iowa, but there was some great competition out there today. It was hot, we didn't get heat like this on our spring break trip, and the wind picked up during the races on the track. But we came here for the heat, and our times and marks were a little off due to that and the wind."
UW is off from competition next weekend before tackling a pair of meets the following week. A group of Badgers will head to San Diego for the Triton Invitational, April 21-22, while another group will head to Fayetteville, Arkansas, for the John McDonnell Invitational the same weekend.
