A St. Cloud sweep: No. 1 Badgers take down Huskies, 3-0

Shaver recorded three points while Campbell earned her second-straight shutout

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Junior Sophia Shaver recorded a goal and two assists while sophomore Kristen Campbell earned her second-straight shutout to lead the No. 1 Wisconsin women's hockey team to a 3-0 win over St. Cloud State on Saturday afternoon.

Sophomore Presley Norby got the Badgers (21-1-0, 12-0-0-0 WCHA) on the board against the Huskies (3-14-2, 1-11-2-0 WCHA) five minutes into the first period, scoring from the top of the right faceoff circle off assists from Lauren Williams and Shaver. It marked Norby's seventh goal of the year.

Midway through the second, senior Claudia Kepler doubled the lead after Mikaela Gardner found the UW co-captain open in the slot. Kepler paces UW with 11 goals on the season.

Shaver wrapped up the scoring for UW with her own goal with five minutes left in the third to put the game out of reach for St. Cloud State. Maddie Rowe and Gardner picked up assists on Shaver's third-period strike.

Campbell once again was stellar in the UW net, earning 16 saves en route to claiming her WCHA-leading sixth shutout of the year.

Play of the game
After not allowing a power-play opportunity in Friday's 1-0 win, the Badgers went on the penalty kill three times during the second period. UW's penalty kill unit came up huge, allowing only four shots on goal on the SCSU power plays.

Shaver recorded her 10th multi-point game of her career, earning assists on UW's first two goals before scoring the Badgers' third goal. Her three points also matched a career high.
- Wisconsin outshot SCSU 43-16, including a 17-4 margin in the first frame and a 16-4 margin in the final period.
- UW enters its holiday break with a perfect 12-0-0-0 conference record, UW's best start in WCHA play since the 2015-16 season.

Straight from the rink
UW head coach Mark Johnson
On Kristen Campbell's play:

"The hard part about some of these games is that if you don't get a lot of work, you can lose your focus. She's been able to focus the entire semester and she's just getting better every game."

On the first half of the year:
"It's been good. I just told the team, we've never played in 22 games in the first semester and we played 22 to start off early so they have a lot to be proud of. Congratulations to them, they made a commitment early on in the summer to come back and train and get themselves ready to go. We're in a good position. We'll get ready for finals, the holidays and then the break."

Junior Sophia Shaver
On the play of her line:

"I think every weekend we start to get more comfortable with each other and we start to notice our tendencies and where they're going to be. We started to click and feed passes through and get some shots in."

On heading into the break:
"I'm really proud of us so far this first semester. We started with such a young team and we've kind of seen them develop throughout the whole path. They're becoming a lot more confident which is really helping us on the ice."

Sophomore Kristen Campbell
On the game:

"I thought we played great today. We really controlled the game from start to finish, and I think we ended things on a high note heading into the break. I'm really proud of our team today."
On the first half of the season:
"I think we're in a really good spot. Every weekend, we've really been taking it one game at a time and just making little improvements each practice. I think we've come a long way, especially the 16 underclassmen in this first half. I'm really proud of how everyone's produced this first half."

Up next
Wisconsin heads into its holiday break with a 21-1-0 record and will resume action on Jan. 13-14 with a home series against Minnesota State.
