AUSTIN, Texas — The Badgers followed up their strong opening showing at the Texas Invitational with a number of standout individual performances and a second-place finish by the women's 200-yard free relay squad on Thursday.
Â
Beata Nelson,
Emmy Sehmann,
Jess Unicomb and
Marissa Berg lifted Wisconsin to a runner-up showing in the 23-team field, clocking in at 1 minute, 29.35 seconds. Nelson's leadoff 50 free split of 22.58 was good for the ninth-best time in school history.
Â
Nelson didn't stop there, however. The sophomore shined in the 200 IM, finishing second with a time of 1:55.36. Nelson broke the Wisconsin record in the 200 IM twice in the same day—her finals performance was only bested by her preliminary round performance of 1:55.16.
Â
"Hopefully people nationally will start to see what we see, and what we have known for a while," said Wisconsin head coach
Whitney Hite. "She's starting to reach her potential and figure things out. It's awesome to see."
Â
Senior
Marissa Berg showcased her toughness, competing back-to-back in the women's 200 IM and the 50 freestyle. Berg finished 10th the 200 IM (1:58.62), good for the sixth-fastest time in school history, then immediately followed up that performance with an 11th-place finish in the 50 free (22.74).
Â
"That 200 IM was a terrific swim, especially for an athlete who is not primarily an IM-er," Hite said of Berg's efforts. "You're talking about a kid who is from small-town Wisconsin who has worked her way into one of the top swimmers in our program. She's one of the best racers that I've ever seen."
Â
Hite was proud of his team's performance on the second day of the Texas Invitational, and looks forward to the next two days of competition.
Â
"I thought we did a really good job today. This meet is tough, and it makes our team tougher," he said. "As we continue to go through the meet we will continue to get better. Our last way will be our best day. But we had some very promising swims today. Things are looking good."
