SECOND-ANNUAL CANCER AWARENESS GAME
Wisconsin final exhibition game on Nov. 5 against UW-Stout also marks the second-annual Cancer Awareness Game. In partnership with the UW Carbone Cancer Center, the Badgers will be recognizing cancer survivors, doctors, researachers and everyone helping to fight this dreaded disease.
In its first year, Greg and Michelle Gard have traveled throughout the state to raise awareness of — and over $1.3 million dollars — for Garding Against Cancer. Their inaugural efforts have proven to be a resounding success as supporters, alumni, and Badgers of all ages rallied around their cause that's dedicated to advancing research and helping those who are battling cancer across Wisconsin.
For each of the last 13 seasons, Wisconsin has hosted a member of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) during exhibition play. The Badgers are 14-0 against the WIAC. UW is 56-4 all-time in exhibition play, owning a current streak of 44 consecutive wins, dating back to 1992.
FIVE THINGS TO KNOW: UW-STOUT
1. HAPPY NEW YEAR: Wisconsin begins its 119th season of men's basketball in 2017-18 and the third season with Greg Gard as the head coach. Gard has led Wisconsin to a 42-18 (.700) record, the second-best win percentage through 60 games in school history -- Walter Meanwell went 56-4 (.933) from 1911-14.
2. WHO'S BACK: Wisconsin returns just 1 starter from last season, 2017 third-team All-American Ethan Happ. Sophomore guard D'Mitrik Trice is the only other player on the roster that has started a game, making two starts in 2016-17. The Badgers will have just one senior in 2017-18, former walk-on Aaron Moesch. In all, UW brings back just 38.3% of the points scored a year ago and 39.4% of the minutes played.
3. HAPP-ENS TO BE ONE OF THE BEST: Junior Ethan Happ is following up on his 2017 third-team AP All-America and All-Big Ten honors with 2017-18 preseason recognition. The forward was named to the preseason All-Big Ten team and second-team preseason All-American by ESPN.com.
4. TOUGH ROAD AHEAD: Wisconsin's 2017-18 schedule features a minimum of 9 games against teams in the AP preseason poll and another 3 against teams receiving votes. The Badgers earned.
5. QUITE A DEBUT: Gard has led Wisconsin to a 42-18 (.700) record in his first two seasons, the second-best win percentage through 60 games in school history. UW finished last season with a mark of 27-10, tallying the fifth-highest single-season win total in school history.
