MADISON, Wis.— The No. 10/12 Wisconsin (1-1-0, 0-1-0-0 Big Ten) men's hockey team was unable to hold off a late surge, falling 3-2 to No. 19 Ohio State (1-0-0, 1-0-0-0 Big Ten) on Friday night at the Kohl Center.
Sophomore forward Trent Frederic was the first to light the lamp, scoring 7:38 into the second period. Freshman forward Linus Weissbach pulled both OSU defensemen with him before passing the puck to Frederic, who sniped a shot from the circle over the blocker of Sean Romeo.
Mason Jobst scored his first goal of the night 14:31 of the second period, tying the game at 1-1.
Freshman Tarek Baker, a Verona native, gave Wisconsin a 2-1 lead midway through the third frame, scoring his first career goal on a penalty shot. Baker was awarded the penalty shot after Ohio State's Matt Joyaux threw his stick to prevent him from scoring.
The Buckeyes surged late as John Wiitala and Jobst each scored in the final five minutes to take the series opener, 3-2.
Senior goaltender Kyle Hayton made 21 saves in the defeat.

Note to Know:
- Linus Weissbach and Trent Frederic share the team lead with three points each after having recorded two apiece last week against Michigan Tech.
- In the second period senior goaltender Kyle Hayton made an incredible save to preserve the Badgers' 1-0 lead, raising his stick to knock away the puck while lying on his back after being toppled over.
- Tarek Baker's penalty shot goal is the first for the Badgers since Seamus Malone scored on Nov. 4, 2016 against Northern Michigan's Mathias Israelsson.

Straight from the Rink:
Head Coach Tony Granato
On Ohio State's aggressive play:
"I think their team just was hungrier tonight. And I don't mean that in a bad way for our team, I thought we were coming off a really good game last week. I think tonight, away from the puck, we didn't support it well enough. I think they came very aggressive, and physical, and our support away from the puck just wasn't good enough…We got a lead, and they just kept coming. To give them credit, they were just the hungrier, more desperate team tonight, and they took advantage of the mistakes we made defensively."
"I think they just kept coming. Ohio State played a really solid road game all the way through. I think there was a period in the second, maybe a 10-minute span, where we actually got to our game a little bit, it looked like we were taking over. But, we weren't able to capitalize and take advantage of that."
Â
"It was a pretty even first period, as far as chances were. But Kyle (Hayton) certainly made some big saves for us. Like I said, I think they came out and got to their game before we got to ours. They were fore-checking hard. They came after us. So the first period, we never really got any momentum going."
Â
On Ryan Wagner:
"Wags was outstanding. He's a great example setter. I just wish we had more guys (pick up on) the way he played. I think that's how we have to play. We all have to play like that. I think his effort and how he competed, shift after shift, was certainly noticed by the coaches. I wish the guys would have noticed that and followed him a little bit more."
Â
On not taking enough shots:
"I don't think we shot the puck enough. I think there were opportunities that were pretty good areas to shoot it, and we turned down shots to look for better plays. And that's something we'll have to do better."
Â
On Ohio State's Mason Jobst:
"We weren't as solid as we were last week, defensively. But they've got some really skilled players that were able to exploit us. Obviously, Jobst was spectacular. His two goals were great. The first one was an individual effort that not many guys can make."
Â
Sophomore forward Trent Frederic
On how the game sits in the locker room:
"Not well obviously. I think we're going to have to come out harder tomorrow. It's not really how we planned our third period so that didn't really sit too well."
Â
On playing with Ryan Wagner on the PK:
"Yeah he's a pretty hard worker and he's easy to play with. He's actually really good on the kill so I enjoy going out with him and it's fun watching him do his thing."
Â
Freshman forward Tarek Baker
On playing a mix of being physical and skillful:
"I'm just trying to do what I can do and stick to my strengths. Just getting pucks in deep but when I get a chance to make some skilled plays I am going to try and make them."
Â
On his penalty shot and getting advice from Hayton:
"Yeah he was giving me some advice but I just felt like I needed to stick to what's worked in the past for me obviously being my first penalty shot in college so that's what I chose to do."
Â
On his celebration:
"I kind of just blacked out and it happened."
Â
On the highs and the lows of the third period:
"Scoring that goal I was feeling pretty high. I think the team was feeling pretty high, too. I just think with the last six minutes there when they scored that second one we were just kind of sitting back a little bit too much and I don't think we were pushing our pace as much as we should've. Obviously when they scored that third goal it put us into desperation mode, but that's something we need to have with that last six minutes and the lead. I think if we change our mindset on that good things will happen."
Â
Junior defenseman Peter Tischke
On the swing in momentum at the end of the game:
"Yeah it changed the momentum a lot. I thought we were playing well and then they got that little swing and we got caught on our heels. At the end of the day they just won more battles than we did and we've got to work on that for tomorrow."
