Brilliant Baylee: Wellhausen scores OT gamewinner to lead UW to Border Battle sweep

No. 1 Badgers defeat No. 6 Golden Gophers, 2-1, in overtime thriller

MINNEAPOLIS – Senior co-captain Baylee Wellhausen scored 1:32 into overtime to lift the No. 1 Wisconsin women's hockey team to a 2-1 victory over No. 6 Minnesota on Sunday at Ridder Arena.

Wellhausen, who entered the weekend goalless, scored her second of the weekend for Wisconsin (12-0-0, 6-0-0-0 WCHA), sending the puck over the shoulder of Minnesota (5-4-1, 4-3-1-0 WCHA) netminder Sydney Peters.

After a scoreless first period, the Badgers capitalized on a 2-on-1 situation as junior Sam Cogan slotted the puck onto the stick of sophomore Alexis Mauermann who buried it past Minnesota goaltender Sydney Peters to put Wisconsin up 1-0 midway through the second period.

However, Minnesota scored shortly after on a power-play to tie the Border Battle at 1-1 heading into the third period.

Three Notes of the Game
- Wisconsin completed its first sweep at Minnesota since the 2006-07 season and only its third road sweep of the Golden Gophers in school history.
- UW improved on its second-best start in program history, as only the 2015-16 Badgers have enjoyed a better start than this year's squad.
- Wisconsin outshot Minnesota, 27-17, marking the 11th time this year UW has outshot its opponent.

Head coach Mark Johnson
On Baylee Wellhausen's play:

"She missed three games early in the season and came back from her injury. We haven't played her on the power play since she's been back. You get in these environments, and these settings and these types of games, your upperclassmen are the ones that have to lead. The game started last night with Sophia (Shaver) scoring and Baylee (Wellhausen) scoring and then today Baylee getting the game-winner. That's a good sign from their standpoint, and gives us an opportunity for the younger players to see what this environment's all about and see how you play against Minnesota in their building. Lot of good learning opportunities. I liked the way we competed."

Senior forward Baylee Wellhausen
On her game-winning goal:

"Abby (Roque) won the battle on the boards, and I saw that it was going to be a 2-on-1 and I knew that if I screamed loud enough, with her vision, she was going to  pass it over to me. I was lucky enough that she got it right on my stick. I had kind of a flashback to my first goal yesterday, so I knew that top blocker side was the place I was going to shoot and I did. Then it hit the pad and at first I wasn't sure it was going to go in. I was about to kick myself. But it slowly just rolled over her shoulder for what felt like forever and I was lucky enough that it went in the net. It was a pretty exciting moment."

On sweeping Minnesota:
"It's exhilarating, honestly. We came into this weekend just wanting to sweep the Gophers and I'm really proud of the team. We put forth 110 percent effort out there. We did all the little things right, and we were lucky enough that it went our way for the first time since 2007. Winning on Gopher soil is pretty awesome. I'm excited for getting this momentum going into Ohio State weekend."
