ATHENS, Georgia – In the first multi-event competition of the year for the Badgers, fifth-year senior Zach Ziemek leads the Wisconsin men's track and field team after the first day of competition at the Bulldog Decathlon as the two-time Big Ten champion is in second with a score of 4,096 points.

Ziemek, the 2016 NCAA Indoor Heptathlon Champion, is 66 points behind Georgia's Karl Saluri, who leads the 19-man field with 4,162 points.
In his first collegiate decathlon, redshirt freshman Trent Nytes is in eighth with 3,914 points, while fifth-year senior Charlie Foss is in 15th with a score of 3,731 points.

Sawyer Smith started the 10-discipline event, but pulled out after four events due to an injury.
In the 100 meters, Ziemek took second in 10.74 seconds, while Foss was ninth in 11.15. Smith and Nytes crossed the line in 11.25 and 11.28, respectively.

Ziemek shined in the long jump with a mark of 24 feet, 6 1/4 inches to finish fourth. Nytes was sixth with a mark of 23-11, while Foss was an inch and place behind Nytes. Smith collected a jump of 21-11 to earn 739 points.

Smith led the Badgers in the shot put with a mark of 43-0 1/2. "Double Z" threw the shot put 42-8, while Nytes threw it 39-9 3/4 and Foss earned a mark of 39-4.

Nytes led the Badgers in the high jump, soaring 6-9 to tie for second. Ziemek took the decathlon lead in the high jump with a jump of 6-5 1/2. Foss jumped 6-3 1/4 while Sawyer cleared 5-11 1/2 before dropping out of the competition.

In the 400 meters, Ziemek clocked in at 50.17, four hundredths off of his personal-best time. Nytes finished in at 51.22 and Foss crossed the line in 52.60.

The second day of the Bulldog Decathlon starts Thursday at 12:30 p.m. CT with the 110 hurdles.
