Pair of UW runners crack Badgers’ top-10 list on Friday

AMES, Iowa – The duo of junior Lorenzo Larry and sophomore Morgan McDonald each rewrote the Wisconsin men's track and field top-10 lists on Friday with tremendous performances at the Lied Recreation Center.

En route to his win in the 200 meters, Larry clocked the second-fastest time in program history in the 200 meters in 21.23 seconds.

It marked a sizeable improvement from Larry's previous personal best at Wisconsin of 21.47 set last week at the Armory Collegiate Invitational.

McDonald also turned in a stellar performance in the 3000 meters of 7:52.09 to finish third in the event. The Sydney, Australia, native's time ranks seventh in program history and fourth in the country this season in the event.

Junior Russell Sandvold won his section of the 3000 meters in 8:02.34, almost a 10 second improvement from his previous personal best. The Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, native finished 11th overall in the event.

Zach Ziemek led the charge for the Badgers in the pole vault, placing second with a clearance of 16 feet, 7 3/4 inches. Behind "Double Z" were two sophomores -- Jake Wallenfang and Tim Guthrie -- who earned fourth and fifth-place finishes, respectively, as they both cleared 16-1 1/4 to set new indoor personal-best marks.

In addition to Larry's win in the 200 meters, junior Ryan Davis clocked in at 21.83 to finish ninth.

In the 60-meter hurdles, Charlie Foss took 10th in a personal-best time of 8.29. Darius Ragland finished 13th in 8.38 while Ziemek (8.38) and Andrew Madison (8.40) were 15th and 17th, respectively.

Foss soared 22-5 3/4 in the long jump to finish 11th.

Riley Budde represented UW in the weight throw, earning a seventh-place finish with a toss of 62-11 1/2. Sophomore Coleman Nelson also launched a throw of 53-8 1/4 that landed him a 17th-place showing.

"Overall, it was a great day for us," UW Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Mick Byrne said. "It was great to see Lorenzo (Larry) and Morgan (McDonald) crack the top-10 lists in their events as both student-athletes are performing at a very high level right now. Russell Sandvold broke a PR in the 3000 meters, Charlie Foss set a new personal-best in the 60 hurdles and Zach Ziemek did well in the pole vault. This is what we want to see heading into the Big Ten meet in two weeks.

"The level of competition here at Iowa State is at a very high level and our student-athletes did a fantastic job today."

Wisconsin returns to action Saturday at the Iowa State Classic, as running events begin at 10 a.m. with the women's 800 meters. The first field events of the day happen at noon with the women's shot put and women's triple jump.
