COLLEGE PARK, Md. – In arguably one of the most exciting matches of the season and an epic Big Ten showdown, the Wisconsin men's soccer team dropped a 3-2 overtime thriller to No. 1 Maryland in College Park.
Â
Wisconsin (7-3-2 overall, 3-2-1 Big Ten) held a 2-1 advantage with two minutes remaining in regulation thanks to goals from sophomore
Sam Brotherton and junior
Mark Segbers. But Maryland's Alex Crognale netted his second goal of the game to send the game into overtime and Eryk Williamson scored in the 98th minute to lift the Terrapins (11-0-2, 6-0-1) to victory.
"It was an excellent Big Ten game - lots of positives in a very tough environment," head coach
John Trask said. "I'm proud of the effort and we are still tied for second place in the Big Ten. We need to turn our attention now to a tough matchup against Milwaukee on Tuesday."
Â
After being down 1-0 at the half, the Badgers scored two goals within three minutes of each other to take the lead over the Terrapins, ruining a Maryland shutout streak that dated back five games.
Â
Maryland opened the scoring, recording a goal off a free kick deep in the Badger's territory. Amar Sedjic served a bent ball into the Badger box that Crognale headed into the back of the net.
Â
It wasn't until the second half the Badgers blew the lid off the Maryland goal, ending a Terrapin shutout streak that lasted more than 500 minutes.
Â
The first Badger strike came off a free kick taken by junior Chris Mueller that bounced once in front of the keeper and landed to Brotherton, a sophomore, for the first UW goal and equalizer.
Â
Brotherton, the Badgers captain, scored his second goal of the season and of his career after returning from a stint with the New Zealand national team this month.
Â
The second goal followed shortly, again set up by Mueller. The junior beat the keeper and rifled a pass across the Terrapins box that landed to another junior, Segbers, for the second goal and the lead. The score was Segbers' third goal of the season and 11th of his career.
Â
It looked like UW was going knock off the No. 1 team in the country, but Maryland leveled the game with a header off of a corner kick to send the game into overtime.
Â
The Badgers lasted deep into the first overtime but were overpowered by the Terps with under three minutes yet again. In an incredible display of shooting, Maryland's Williamson sent a shot to the lower left corner of the net and beat the Badgers' goalkeeper to the corner.
Â
Junior
Philipp Schilling got the start in net for the Badgers where he made a number of jaw-dropping saves to deny Maryland further access. Schilling tied his career high with an incredible six saves.
Â
One of the biggest highlights of the match was the stellar performance by the Wisconsin backline. The Badger defense put up an incredible fight and clinched a season-high eight saves in the match.
Â
Maryland outshot Wisconsin 12-7 and 11-7 in shots on goal.
Mike Catalano led the Badgers in shots and shots on goal with three in each category.
The Badgers are back in action against Milwaukee on Tuesday at the McClimon Soccer Complex at 7 p.m.
