GOLD RIVER, Calif. --- The Wisconsin women's rowing team took a step forward in the 2015 season as the program captured 13th at the 2015 NCAA Rowing Championships. The three-day event finished on Sunday at Mercer Lake.

Wisconsin's best finish in the second varsity eight since 2010 and the varsity eight's best result since 2012 helped the team finish with its best overall finish since placing 11th in 2012.

This year's 13th-place result is the schools best since the field expanded to 22 teams for the 2013 season.

Wisconsin collected 65 points for its 13th-place team finish. Ohio State collected 125 points for its unprecedented third-consecutive NCAA rowing title. California (114) and Brown (112) completed the top-three team spots. Other Big Ten finishers included Michigan in 10th with 84 points and Indiana in 11th with 73 points.

"We had a really successful day and we're really proud of our finishes," head coach Bebe Bryans remarked. "All three boats raced up to their capabilities, which was a wonderful way for our seniors to finish their careers as Badger rowers.

"Both the varsity eight and second varsity eight exceeded their seed coming into the regatta and raced in a way that proved we are capable of competing at this level and laid great groundwork for next season."

Wisconsin's headlining varsity eight finished the season on a high note, winning its last two races and claiming 13th. The Badgers won their C/D semifinal Saturday, then followed up with a victory on Sunday in the C final.

Wisconsin clocked 6:36.006 over 2000 meters to win the C final over second-place Yale. The Bulldogs timed 6:38.916 for second. Gonzaga (6:41.158), Southern California (6:44.218), Notre Dame (6:44.901) and UCF (6:55.452) rounded out the C final.

The varsity eight performance garnered the Badgers 30 points towards its team total.

It has been Wisconsin's varsity four that has typically led the Badgers' NCAA performance, but this time the second varsity eight grabbed top honors for just the third time in 12 NCAA trips for UW. The boat placed third in the petite final for ninth place overall. Stanford took the petite final in 6:32.060, with Texas second in 6:35.180. The Badgers' time of 6:35.740 beat out Michigan, Indiana and Virginia in the petite final, and gave them 28 team points.

The four ended up with a 16th-place finish after taking fourth in the C final. Indiana and Harvard took first and second in the C Final, while Southern California nipped the Badgers at the finish line for third. The result was good for seven team points for UW.

"The four raced better every time they went on the water, and came off after the last race knowing they had left all they had on the course," Bryans said.

"Conditions were very good - variable wind changing around as the regatta went along, but nothing to affect the fairness of lanes. Not too hot - just right for a championship regatta.

"Many thanks to the CSUS Aquatic center for, once again, hosting a fantastic regatta. The Badgers are already planning what we will improve to return here to the NCAAs next season."
