ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The Wisconsin men's tennis team was unable to continue its momentum from Saturday's victory over Michigan State, falling to the Michigan Wolverines by a final score of 5-2.
UW began the contest with evenly matched doubles action. However, the Badgers were defeated by their Michigan opponents on Courts 2 and 3 and ultimately dropped the doubles point.
"We knew doubles play was going to be crucial," head coach Greg Van Emburgh said. "Michigan just ended up playing a little better in some key spots at some key moments."
In singles play, the Cardinal and White could not seem to rebound from the early setback, falling in four of the six individual matches. Leading the way for Wisconsin and earning the two team points were Jakhongir Jalalov and Jose Maria Martin De Oliva Carranza.
Jalalov outlasted Alex Petrone on Court 2, defeating his Michigan foe in a tiebreak, 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-5). Carranza then swept Tyler Gardiner in straight sets on Court 5, 6-3, 6-4.
In one of the most competitive and back and forth matches of the day, Josef Dodridge narrowly fell to Michael Zhu on Court 1 by final score of 5-7, 6-1, 1-0 (11-9).
Remy, Zordani and Sinha each fell in straight sets on their respective courts (Courts 3, 4 and 6) to finish out the day.
The Badgers will close out the Big Ten and regular season action next weekend with a pair of home matches versus Illinois and Northwestern. Wisconsin will first face Northwestern on Friday at 6 p.m. (CT) before battling Illinois on Sunday at Noon.
