FORT WORTH, Texas- The Wisconsin men's tennis team knew it would be facing a challenge in its match against No. 15 TCU Sunday, but challenges are nothing new for the young Badger squad. UW dropped its dual with TCU, 6-1, and the match stood as the team's eighth contest versus a ranked opponent in its first 10 matches.
"Our schedule has been tough, but it has prepared us for the rest of the season," said head coach Greg Van Emburgh. "I'm very optimistic about the outlook for this weekend and beyond."
UW opened its match by claiming the doubles point in dramatic fashion. After jumping out to an early lead with a Lamar Remy and Tomas Pitra victory, TCU was able to tie up the dual at 1-1.
Alexander Kokorev and Jakhongir Jalalov were unable to secure victory on court 1, falling to No. 20 Nick Chappell and Will Stein, 6-4.
The freshman pair of Jose Maria Martin De Oliva Carranza and Josef Dodridge clinched the point for the Badgers with a thrilling tiebreak win, 7-6 (8-6).
Although singles play did not pan out to be as successful for UW, the team competed well on all courts. Dodridge fell to No. 28 Cameron Norrie, 6-2, 6-3, while Lamar Remy was defeated by No. 48 Nick Chappell, 6-0, 7-6 (7-5).
Jalalov played point-for-point with Guillermo Nunez but couldn't secure victory on court 3, dropping the point by a final score of 7-5, 7-6 (7-1). Pitra won his first set against Arnau Dachs, but he was retired after falling in the second set.
Despite playing competitive matches, freshmen Carranza and Darius Mackenzie each lost to their TCU foes in straight sets.
"It was really impressive to be able to get the doubles point and give ourselves a legitimate chance against TCU, who is a very good team with many experienced players," said Van Emburgh."Overall, we did a really good job on courts 1-6 in singles, and the score doesn't reflect how close the match really was."
The Badgers will return to Nielsen Tennis Stadium to host Green Bay and Nebraska-Omaha in a pair of home matches next weekend.
