UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- The score did not accurately reflect the Wisconsin men's hockey team's (2-17-4, 0-7-2-2) performance Friday night, as the Badgers lost to Penn State (14-7-4, 6-2-1-0), 5-2, at Pegula Arena.

In a game that finished with both teams firing 37 shots on goal, Wisconsin gave up the game's first tally, but Cameron Hughes responded by picking right up where he left off last weekend, netting two-straight goals.
The tying tally was a quick wrist shot high, short side off a pass from Ryan Wagner.
An unselfish play by Eddie Wittchow kept the game deadlocked. The Florida Panthers' draft pick sacrificed his body to block a Nittany Lions' goal after UW goaltender Joel Rumpel was drawn out of the crease.
Hughes then gave the Badgers their third first-period lead in the last five games by following up his own shot to bury a back-handed rebound.
The goal marked his third in Wisconsin's last two games. The Edmonton, Alberta, native registered his first career score last Saturday on the power play to give UW a late-game lead against Minnesota.
UW's lead did not last long, though, as Eric Scheid picked up his 13th goal of the year 1:26 into the second period, slapping one through Rumpel's five-hole during a scramble in front of the net.
The Badgers net minder came up huge later in the frame, denying a short-handed breakaway attempt by Dylan Richard.
PSU regained the advantage thanks to a diving goal by David Goodwin after a pass from the right boards sent the puck in front. Jack Dougherty interfered with Taylor Holstrom during the play, which prevented Rumpel from sliding over to block Goodwin's attempt and gave the Nittany Lions a two-minute power play.
Wisconsin was able to kill off the man advantage-Penn State's only one of the game. The Badges finished 0-for-2 on the power play.
The Nittany Lions had numerous chances to extend their lead early in the last period, including a one-timer rung off the post by Casey Bailey and an opportunity by Scott Conway after he beat Dougherty to a bouncing puck.
It was Bailey who eventually scored Penn State's fourth goal. The defenseman found a soft spot in UW's defense, beating Rumpel with a slap shot from the point just over halfway through the third.
The Nittany Lions added an empty netter with 9.2 seconds left on the clock. Holstrom beat out an icing call and slid the puck into the goal to seal the game.
Rumpel finished with 32 saves-his 11th game of 30 or more stops in 2014-15. PSU goaltender PJ Musico denied 35 Badgers shots.
The series finale is set for Saturday at 1 p.m. on American Sports Network.
