Feb. 21, 2015

MADISON, Wis. -- With a 3-0 loss Saturday night at the Kohl Center the Wisconsin men's hockey team (4-20-4, 2-10-2-2) settled for a series split against Michigan State (13-13-2, 7-5-2-2).

The loss stunted a two-game winning streak for the Badgers.

 Fast Facts
• Rumpel has at least 30 svs for 15th time this year
• UW recorded 30 shots for fifth time in 2014-15
• Wisconsin allowed two goals in 4:41 span of second

Unlike Friday night, UW fell behind early, giving up two goals to Ryan Keller during a span of 4:41 in the first period.

Michael Ferrantino charged the net on the left side and backhanded a shot on Wisconsin goaltender Joel Rumpel. The rebound came out front to Travis Walsh who quickly sent the puck back toward the Badgers' goal mouth. Rumpel made another save, but the puck banked off the inside of his bent leg and directly to Ryan Keller on the back door. The Farmington Hills, Michigan, product gathered himself, turned toward Rumpel and found the back of the net with a low shot.

Later, Keller received a pass from Brent Darnell and spun around, shooting on the backhand to put Michigan State up two.

The Badgers tested MSU net minder Jake Hildebrand only four times compared to the Spartans' 13 shots in the opening 20 minutes.

UW picked up the pace in the second, though, playing to a 0-0 tie in the period.

Joseph LaBate nearly pulled Wisconsin within one, as he rung a wrist shot off the right post with a shot on the rush.

Following an unsuccessful power play by the Badgers, UW's fourth line--the only forward combination that remained the same from Friday to Saturday--reenergized the team with a solid shift. Aidan Cavallini, Matt Paape and Corbin McGuire worked in the MSU zone, with McGuire eventually generating a chance to score after Jack Dougherty toe-dragged and fed the right winger with a pass down low. He stepped out from the left side of the net and tried to stuff the puck home, but to no avail.

Wisconsin crafted a better power play late in the second period, but good scoring opportunities by Grant Besse and Cameron Hughes were halted by Hildebrand.

The team finished 0-for-5 with the man advantage.

UW killed two penalties in the period to keep the game close entering the third.

Michigan State added to its lead with a tic-tac-toe tally 4:57 into the final frame.

Chase Drake received the puck behind the Badgers' net with a man on him. The Wisconsin defenseman attempted to tip the puck toward his teammate, but instead it slid to Joe Cox standing to the left of the slot. He passed over to Thomas Ebbing who easily buried his fifth tally of 2014-15.

UW peppered Hildebrand for 17 shots in the third--10 more than the Spartans--but were unable to convert.

Rumpel finished with at least 30 saves for the third-straight game, while Hildebrand stopped 31 shots and earned his fourth shutout of the season.

Wisconsin will play the next two weekends in the state of Michigan, beginning next weekend in Ann Arbor. The Badgers and Wolverines will meet at 6:30 p.m. CT in the opener, Friday on FS Wisconsin and FS Detroit+. The series finale begins at 3 p.m. CT on Saturday and can be seen on BTN.
