COLUMBUS, Ohio  -- In the opener of a series between two teams needing a spark, the Wisconsin men's hockey team fell Friday to Ohio State, 2-1, at Schottenstein Center.

The Badgers were outshot, 42-24, but solid goaltending kept the contest close to the very end.

 Fast Facts
• Rumpel earned fifth 40-save performance of year
• McGuire scored second-career goal
• Badgers led after first period for fourth time

A fast-paced first period produced numerous odd-man rushes for each team.

In a 20-second span during an Ohio State power play, Wisconsin and the Buckeyes had a 3-on-1 and 2-on-1, respectively.

The Badgers' rush was capped by a save from OSU goaltender Christian Frey, while the Buckeyes were denied by Wisconsin netminder Joel Rumpel's glove on their opportunity.

UW drew first blood at the 15:56 mark, as Corbin McGuire buried a rebound from the right side.

After the Badgers' forecheck forced a turnover, Kevin Schulze wound up a slapper from the point, which caromed off Frey's pad directly to a net-crashing McGuire who scored his second-career goal.

OSU picked up its play in the second, though, grabbing hold of the lead with two goals.

The Buckeyes' first tally came after the puck banked off the back boards and squirted out on the left side of the UW net. Tyler Lundey immediately fired a shot on Rumpel, getting it to squeak through the Wisconsin goaltender's pads.

Ohio State took the lead with a brilliant shot by Nick Shilkey after coming off the wall. The winger grabbed the puck, deked left to right and sniped a shot between Rumpel's shoulder and the left post.

Despite two power plays in the third period, Wisconsin was unable to find the back of the net.

Rumpel finished with 40 saves, marking his fifth 40-save performance of the season. Frey denied 24 shots to earn his fourth win of 2014-15.

The series wraps up Saturday at 6 p.m. on American Sports Network.
