Pankowski, Desbiens and Cogan receive honors after UW’s sweep of Minnesota
MADISON, Wis. - For the first time since the 2010-11 season, the top-ranked Wisconsin women's hockey team swept the WCHA weekly honors, the conference announced Tuesday.
Sophomore Annie Pankowski was named the WCHA Offensive Player of the Week, junior Ann-Renée Desbiens was honored as WCHA Defensive Player of the Week and freshman Sam Cogan earned WCHA Rookie of the Week accolades following Wisconsin's sweep of Border Battle rival Minnesota last weekend at LaBahn Arena.
It marks the first time a school has earned all three of the WCHA weekly honors since UW swept the awards on Jan. 5, 2011. Hilary Knight was named the league's offensive player of the week, Anne Dronen received defensive player of the week honors and Madison Packer was recognized as the rookie of the week.
Pankowski scored three goals, including a pair of game-winners, during the No. 1 Badgers' sweep of No. 3 Minnesota at LaBahn Arena. On Friday, Pankowski scored the game-winning goal with 55 seconds left in overtime to give Wisconsin a 3-2 win over its Border-Battle rival, which snapped an 18-game winless skid against the Golden Gophers.
On Saturday, Pankowski scored on a breakaway before adding the game-winner in the second period as UW earned its first sweep of Minnesota since the 2009-10 season.
Pankowski's three goals were the most in the conference last weekend and she extended her point-streak to 21 games, which is the fifth-longest streak in program history. During the run, UW is 20-1 and has outscored its opponents 96-13.
The Laguna Hills, California, native ranks seventh in the country in scoring, averaging 1.78 points per contest, and her 14 goals this season rank third in the conference.
Desbiens was spectacular in the Badgers' net, limiting the high-powered Minnesota offense to only three goals during the weekend. On Friday, Desbiens stopped 21 of the 23 shots she faced, while on Saturday she stopped 23 of the 24 shots she encountered to lead UW to its first sweep of Minnesota since the 2009-10 season.
The one goal that Minnesota scored on Saturday was the fewest the Golden Gophers, the top-ranked offense in the NCAA, have scored this season.
The La Malbaie, Quebec, native leads the NCAA in goals-against average (0.57), save percentage (.966), shutouts (9), and is tied for the lead in winning percentage (1.000).
Cogan scored and added an assist in UW's 3-2 win on Friday. She tied the game in the second period before assisting on UW's second goal of the contest.
The Ottawa, Ontario, native led the WCHA in points among rookies last weekend and she finished the series with a +1 rating. Cogan is tied for ninth in the country in scoring among rookies, averaging 0.78 points per contest.
Wisconsin hits the road this weekend to take on No. 9 North Dakota in a Friday/Saturday series in Grand Forks, North Dakota. Faceoff on Friday is set for 7 p.m. (CT), while Saturday's game starts at 4 p.m.
