'Varsity' Magazine: Taking his turn

Greg Gard gets his chance to lead the Badgers
MADISON, Wis. -- The Dec. 22 edition of Varsity Magazine is available, with complete coverage of the transition in the men's basketball program from Hall of Fame head coach Bo Ryan to his longtime assistant, Greg Gard.
When Bo Ryan unexpectedly called it quits on Dec. 15, the responsibility of steering the Badgers' ship fell to Greg Gard. An assistant under Ryan for 23 years, including all 14 at Wisconsin, Gard has been preparing for this day for a long time. UWBadgers.com Senior Writer Mike Lucas talked to Gard, assistant coaches Gary Close and Lamont Paris and a number of former Badgers players about why Gard is the right person at the right time.
Lucas also was able to chat with the newest member of the Badgers' coaching staff, Howard Moore. A familiar face as a player and assistant coach, Moore officially returned to Madison on Tuesday ready to hit the ground running.
"The Voice of the Badgers" Matt Lepay has a unique perspective on all things UW, having sat in one of the best seats for more than 30 years. While he says there is no perfect time for a coaching transition, the consistency between the approaches of Ryan and Gard should ease the process. UWBadgers.com Insider Andy Baggot takes a different tact when analyzing the coaching change, wondering where Ryan ranks among the greatest coaches in Wisconsin history.
The 'Varsity' Magazine mobile app is free and available for download on iPhones, iPads or any Android devices. If you don't have access to a mobile device, a web-friendly version of the magazine can be found here.
The mobile app has been downloaded more than 25,000 times. It features enhancements like embedded video, social media streams for the different Badgers teams, top-notch photography and interactive elements like scrolling text and swipeable photo galleries.
The holiday season is all about giving and sacrificing for others. UW student-athletes live that throughout that year with the Badgers Give Back program. Take an inside look at a program that has resulted in nearly 70 percent participation and more than 8,000 volunteer hours a year. "It's absolutely something special."
