MADISON, Wis. – After scoring her fourth goal of the season Friday night,
McKenna Meuer joked that she was by no means a "big-time" goal scorer.
With the game-winning goal against Purdue on Sunday, she now leads her team in scoring.
Behind Meuer's team-leading fifth goal of the season, the Wisconsin women's soccer team shut out the Boilermakers at home in a 1-0 final at the McClimon Soccer Complex on Sunday.
Goalkeeper
Caitlyn Clem had five saves and made a number of key stops down the stretch that helped the Badgers (5-4-3, 2-1-1 Big Ten) hold on for their third-straight shutout and second-consecutive Big Ten win.
"Huge credit to Purdue. If it's a 1-0 game, you know they're going to be pushing people forward and I thought we struggled a little bit with our legs," UW head coach
Paula Wilkins said. "We had a lot of older players on the field who have the experience, but we didn't make it easy on ourselves and it's something we can build on.
"It's a great relief to get two wins at home and in the Big Ten, especially because the Big Ten is so tight."
Coming off a 3-0 win over Indiana on Friday night, Wisconsin continued to show signs of a strengthening offensive attack and heavily pressured the Boilermakers (6-5-0, 1-3-0) in the first half. UW outshot Purdue by an 8-1 margin, including four shots on goal.
Marisa Kresge played a big part in creating energy and giving the offense an early spark in the final third for UW. The senior forward earned a pair of corner kicks for the Badgers and tallied the first shot on goal of the game.
The persistent pressure finally paid off in the 32nd minute, as senior midfielder
McKenna Meuer knocked in a header off a free kick taken by
Kinley McNicoll to give UW a 1-0 lead. It marked the second-straight game Meuer has scored and her 11th point in 12 games this season.
Looking to tie the game up, Purdue played the role of aggressor for the majority of the second half and had UW on its heels in a number of spots. But Clem, senior center back
Brianna Stelzer and the Badger backline held firm. Clem made all five of her saves in the second half to help UW secure the clean sheet.
It marked the third-straight shutout for Clem and the fourth of her career.
Wisconsin concludes a three-game homestand on Friday, Oct. 2, by welcoming border rival and current Big Ten leader No. 18 Minnesota to Madison for a game at 6 p.m. CT.
