MADISON, Wis. – Unable to get its offense firing, the Wisconsin men's soccer team fell 2-0 to SIU-Edwardsville at the McClimon Soccer Complex on Tuesday night.
The Badgers (2-5-0, 1-0-0 Big Ten) registered just one shot on goal in the game, while the Cougars (4-2-1) found the back of the net twice to earn the road victory.
"Only one shot (on goal) over 90 minutes is not what we expect from this group of players. As I told them – and I'll take full responsibility – we've traveled quite a bit this season and we just weren't firing today," UW head coach
John Trask said. "Sometimes that just happens. We were not ready to play today. As a coach, you've got to take responsibility.
"I suggest to anyone who was here tonight to give us another chance and come out on Sunday, because I know these guys and I believe in these guys. That wasn't the Badgers tonight. I take responsibility as a coach."
While SIUE outshot Wisconsin, 11-5, the Badgers earned six corner kicks, but were unable to generate any shots on goal with the opportunities.
Devyn Jambga got SIUE on the board first just before halftime in the 44th minute. After Mohamed Awad served in a free kick, Justin Bilyeu worked with Jambga to create the goal on a double header off the set piece.
Garet Christianson sealed the deal for the Cougars in the 87th minute, adding insurance and pushing the lead to 2-0 by beating UW goalkeeper
Adrian Remeniuk low on a ball that slipped through back post.
Remeniuk fell to 2-1-0 on the season and finished the game with one save for UW.
The Badgers prepare next to host No. 11 Maryland on Sunday as part of Wisconsin's PAC the MAC doubleheader with the UW women's soccer team. The men's game kicks off at noon and will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network, followed by the women's game vs. Purdue at 3 p.m. CT.
"Maryland is an excellent program. I think the guys will be ready for that game," Trask said. "It's on national TV with the 1995 national championship team coming back (for a reunion). We're going to play with some passion on Sunday, I'll guarantee that.
"We need to play with a little more quality as well, but there'll be a passion to this team."
As part of the PAC the MAC doubleheader, general admission for both games is $1 and UW-Madison students get in free with student ID. Fans who go to Wisconsin's football game vs. Hawaii on Saturday can also bring their used ticket stub and get free admission at the McClimon Soccer Complex. Wisconsin soccer scarves will be given away as well (while supplies last).
