PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- The Wisconsin men's soccer team won its first game of the season and began Big Ten Conference play 1-0 with an unbelievable game-winning goal by
Christopher Mueller with one second left in double overtime against Rutgers on the road Friday night.
With time winding down in double overtime and a scoreless draw looming, Mueller took one last shot at net and redirected a blast off a defender and over the goalkeeper for the score with just one second remaining. Not only was it the game-winning golden goal, but it was Mueller's first-career goal.
"Congrats to all the guys on this win. I'm just really proud of them," UW head coach
John Trask said. "I don't want to single any one person out. I told the men after the game that this was the kind of performance that makes the athletic program and the school proud. It was tight and it was gritty, but the guys battled. This was a total team performance.
"This is what it's all about."
Tom Barlow was credited with the game-winning assist on Mueller's goal, which marked Barlow's first point of the season.
UW goalkeeper
Adrian Remeniuk was another standout performer for the Badgers (1-4-0, 1-0-0 Big Ten). The sophomore stepped up to make a career-high 10 saves and recorded his third-career shutout, despite facing 27 shots, 10 shots on goal and three corner kicks.
Remeniuk and the UW defense held firm against 17 shots from RU in the second half alone to get the game to overtime.
Offensively for the Badgers, it was Barlow and
Mike Catalano who led and finished with a team-high three shots each. Mueller and
Mark Segbers each recorded two shots.
"I've got a tremendous amount of respect for Dan Donigan and his staff, program and players," Trask said. "It was a great college soccer game tonight that could've gone either way. Fortunately, we were the benificiarys of a great goal.
"Last year we had two great games against Rutgers and we look forward to more in the future."
Wisconsin returns to action next Saturday, Sept. 19, with a road game at St. John's.
