MADISON, Wis. – Wisconsin men's cross country junior Malachy Schrobilgen and sophomore Morgan McDonald netted top-10 finishes as the No. 11 Badgers finished 17th at the 2015 Wisconsin adidas Invitational at the Zimmer Championship Course on Friday.

Schrobilgen, a two-time Big Ten cross country champion, finished fifth among the men's lead pack in a time of 23 minutes, 37.2 seconds. Schrobilgen was only a mere 2.7 seconds behind meet champion Marc Scott of Tulsa.

"Great run by Malachy Schrobilgen," Director of Cross Country and Track and Field, Mick Byrne, said. "That's the first time he's run real hard this season and he did fantastic."

Finishing second for the Badgers and 10th overall was sophomore McDonald, who was last year's Big Ten Freshman of the Year. McDonald finished the 8-kilometer race in 23:46.6.

"Fantastic job by Morgan McDonald," Byrne remarked. "You could see Morgan out there sticking his nose out in the front the whole time. He paid a big price over the last kilometer, but he had the courage to get after it."

In third place for UW was junior Russell Sandvold, who recorded a time of 24:21.4 to place 81st.

Rounding out the Badgers top five were sophomore Joe Hardy, who finished fourth for UW and 159th overall in a time of 24:48.5. Redshirt freshman Tyson Miehe finished fifth for the Badgers and 205th overall with a time of 25:15.1.

As a team, UW picked up 459 points against a field that featured 17 of the top 30 teams in the latest U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association National Coaches' Poll.

Syracuse finished with 102 points to become the first repeat men's team winner at the Wisconsin adidas Invitational. BYU finished second with 187, while Big Ten foe Michigan was third with 221. In fourth place was Virginia with 240, while Iona rounded out the top five with 270 points.

"We've got to figure out what's wrong and fix it," Byrne said. "Times like this, they challenge you as a coach and they challenge you as a student-athlete, and that's the great thing about our sport.

"You try to figure it out and you try to fix it and put the race behind you and move forward. We've got the conference meet coming up in two weeks and if we dwell on this too much, then it could be a tough day out there."

The Badgers continue their season on November 1, when they head to Chicago to compete in the Big Ten Championship.  Last year UW captured its 47th Big Ten cross country team crown and Schrobilgen won his second-straight Big Ten individual title.

"Our guys are going to have to respond to today," Byrne said. "I certainly take responsibility for today, but our student-athletes also have to step up to the plate and be held accountable, and we're going to do that.

"We still have two weeks until Big Tens, and we've got a lot of things that we've got to correct."
