Boston College hands Wisconsin first loss of season

Eagles score 12 seconds into first period, beat Badgers 6-0

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – No. 4-ranked Boston College scored 12 seconds into the opening period and used a three-goal second period to skate past Wisconsin 6-0 on Friday night, handing the Badgers their first loss of the season.

Austin Cangelosi caused UW (0-1-2) trouble for the second straight meeting between the teams at Kelley Rink, as the junior forward once again netted a pair of goals to lead the way for BC.

Cangelosi scored twice in the Eagles win over the Badgers two seasons ago in Boston, and opened the scoring just 12 seconds into the opening period on Friday night. After Chris Calnan's initial shot was stopped by UW goaltender Adam Miller, Cangelosi tracked down the rebound in front and stuffed it home to give the Eagles the early 1-0 lead.

"We talked about having a great start, and that was not the start we wanted," Wisconsin head coach Mike Eaves said.

A little more than four minutes later, Boston College (2-1-0) got on the board again, as Teddy Doherty's wrist shot skipped past Miller from outside the blue line, giving the Eagles a short-handed tally and a 2-0 lead at the 4:39 mark of the first period.

Eaves elected to pull Miller for freshman goaltender Matt Jurusik after the second goal, and Jurusik helped stem the tide for UW for the remainder of the first period. Jurusik, who had 22 saves in his first career game last Saturday, stopped all seven shots he faced in the remainder of the first period to keep UW down just 2-0 heading into the intermission.

"Well, I think the breakdown of the game was we didn't get the start we wanted, but it was only 2-0 after one," Eaves said. "And for the first eight minutes of the second period, we were outshooting them. I thought that we were playing the way that we needed to play to try to make a game out of it.

"But that's a talented young group over there. We made two big mistakes and the game was broken open."

Boston College, the No. 1 team in the country in the preseason polls, eventually got the scoring going again in the second period. Ryan Fitzgerald scored 6:50 into the frame, and Cangelosi and Colin White scored 40 seconds apart with less than five minutes left in the period to put the game out of reach.

"After about the eighth minute of the second period, I thought, 'This is the way we need to play if we can get a goal here.' But it never happened," Eaves said. "They broke it open. That was probably the turning point of the game."

Boston College added the last goal in the third period on a five-on-three power play, which was the only goal for the Eagles on the man advantage in six opportunities. Wisconsin has given up just two goals on the penalty kill so far this season, killing off 10 of the 12 penalties against it.

Jurusik finished the game with 19 stops on 23 total shots.

"This group that we have, we're trying to find a starting goaltender. We got a lot of young guys that are learning. We did some good things," Eaves said.

Wisconsin finishes off the Boston road trip with a game against Boston University tomorrow night. The drop of the puck is slated for 6 p.m. CT.
