MADISON, Wis. -- In its third-straight game against a top-five opponent, the Wisconsin men's hockey team (2-11-2, 0-2-0-0 Big Ten) earned a 3-3 tie against No. 2 Boston University (11-3-4, 7-1-2 Hockey East), Friday night at the Kohl Center.

 Fast Facts
• Schulze scored first career short-handed goal
• Zulinick extended point streak to six games
• Rumpel made 36 saves

The game will be recorded in the standings as a draw, but Boston prevailed, 2-0, in the shootout after five scoreless minutes of overtime.

Wisconsin gained momentum early in the game on a power play in which the Badgers created numerous scoring chances.

Jack Dougherty put a booming slapper on BU goaltender Matt O'Connor following a great play by Joseph LaBate in the right corner. After being knocked to the ground, LaBate slid the puck back to the point from the seat of his pants, setting up the scoring opportunity.

Despite the chances, Wisconsin finished 0-for-3 on the power play. BU has now killed off 36 of its opponents' last 39 chances with the man advantage.

UW's early momentum was halted at the 7:53 mark, as Boston's Brandon Fortunato scored on a slap shot from the left point on a BU power play.

Hard work on the forecheck and in the defensive zone revived the Badgers' pressure, though.

LaBate, Jedd Soleway and Chase Drake each delivered crowd-pleasing checks within a five-minute span following the BU goal to keep the Kohl Center livened.

Despite trailing by a goal after the opening frame, Wisconsin registered a season-high 16 shots on goal-seven more than its opponent.

UW evened the score on the penalty kill 41 seconds into the second period, as Kevin Schulze redirected a puck past O'Connor with his backhand.

Brad Navin entered the BU zone carrying the puck along the left boards with a Terrier back-checker on his tail. Aware of a streaking Schulze, the senior captain placed an perfect feed toward the net to set up the tally.

The goal marked Wisconsin's first short-handed goal and Schulze's second score of the season.

UW took the lead later in the second thanks to a surprising and spectacular wrister by Soleway. It was such a surpising shot the crowd was late in reacting to the tally.

Morgan Zulinick found Soleway near the bottom of the right faceoff circle, who then sniped a shot top right and to the short side, knocking O'Connor's water bottle off the top of the net and giving the Badgers the clear advantage.

Zulinick extended his point streak to six games with the assist.

Wisconsin caught a break in the third period to extend its lead.

Matt Ustaski cleared the puck out of the Badgers' defensive zone with authority, sending it all the way down the ice and directly toward O'Connor. The BU goaltender emerged from his goal crease to meet the puck and move it back up the ice quickly. But instead of finding a teammate's stick, O'Connor inadvertently lifted a pass at Brien Diffley, which ricocheted off the defenseman and into the empty net.

Ustaski was credited with the goal as the last Badger to touch the puck. It was his third tally and fifth point of the season.

While the own-goal with 2:41 left in the contest may have discouraged many teams, Boston University did not give up.

The Terriers pulled O'Connor and added an extra attacker seconds after winning the center-ice face off, which followed Wisconsin's score.

Less than a minute later, Ahti Oksanen received a pass in the slot from Cason Hohmann and rung a shot off the left post and into the goal, reducing the Badgers' lead to one.

Oksanen then tied the game with 2.2 seconds left, tipping a shot from Matt Grzelcyk to send the game to overtime.

Boston dominated the extra five minutes, recording six shots to UW's none, but UW goaltender Joel Rumpel held strong to earn a tie.

The Swift Current, Saskatchewan, native finished with 36 saves, including 17 from the third period on.

O'Connor stopped 29 shots, as the Badgers compiled their highest shot total of the year (32).

BU went on to win the shootout, scoring on their first two attempts, while UW failed on its first two shots.

The series finale is set for Saturday at 7 p.m. and can be seen live on Wisconsin Channel.
