MADISON, Wis. -- A 1:40 span of the second period doomed Wisconsin (2-16-3, 0-6-1-1 Big Ten) in an otherwise solid effort during a 7-5 loss to Minnesota (12-9-2, 3-2-2-0 Big Ten) on Friday at the Kohl Center.
Fast Facts | • UW tied its season-high goal total | • Ustaski registered a goal and two assists | • Besse scored his team-leading eighth goal | |
For the second time in as many Fridays, the Badgers grabbed a first-period lead during a series opener. And for the second time in as many Fridays, the Badgers lost it. Last weekend Michigan came back from three down to win game one, while Minnesota recovered from a two-goal deficit Friday in its victory.
Grant Besse gave UW a 3-1 advantage 4:13 into the second period after first-period goals by Joseph LaBate on a tip and Matt Ustaski on a breakaway had UW up 2-1 after the first frame.
Ustaski also picked up two assists in the game, giving him the first three-point performance of his career.
Wisconsin held on to the 3-1 lead for just over six minutes before U of M exploded for four goals in a span of 1:40.
Jack Dougherty stunted the Gophers' momentum late in the frame, burying his second goal of the season on a shot from the left side.
But a costly Badgers penalty about halfway through the third period led to Minnesota's sixth goal, which was followed by another 36 seconds later.
Jedd Soleway scored a power-play goal on a redirect in front to bring UW within two, but the Badgers' rally would go no further.
Wisconsin goaltender Joel Rumpel made 28 saves in the loss, while Minnesota netminder Adam Wilcox stopped 27 shots.
Despite the result, the Badgers tied their season-high goal total.
The puck will drop at 7 p.m. in the series finale Saturday, with the game airing on BTN. Wisconsin's 1990 NCAA championship team, which celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, will be recognized during the first intermission of the contest.
Fans are encouraged to wear white to "White Out" the Kohl Center.
