Jan. 23, 2014

MADISON, Wis. -- Despite getting out to its largest lead of the season, the Wisconsin men's hockey team (2-14-3, 0-4-1-1) was unable to stifle an offensive flurry by Michigan, as the No. 16 Wolverines (14-7-0, 6-1-0-0) scored six unanswered goals in a 7-4 win Friday night at the Kohl Center.

 Fast Facts
Grant Besse scored in third-straight game
• Schulze recorded career-high three points (assists)
• UW went 3-for-7 on the power play

The Badgers had their highest-scoring opening 20 minutes of the season, netting three goals. Prior to the game, UW had scored just two goals total in the first period all year and only finished a game with three or more goals on three occasions (North Dakota, Ferris State, Boston University). It was UW's first-three goal period since Jan. 10, 2014 against Michigan.

Joseph LaBate got the Badgers rolling with a power-play redirect goal in the slot off a pass from Jack Dougherty.

Michigan tied the score nearly 11 minutes later, but Grant Besse and LaBate each tallied in a span of 4:28 to give the Badgers a 3-1 advantage. Besse leads the team with seven goals and 10 points.

The Wolverines made a goaltender change during the first intermission, removing Steve Racine for Zach Nagelvoort. Racine allowed three goals on eight shots.

Jedd Soleway furthered Wisconsin's momentum just over two minutes into the second period.

The Vernon, British Columbia, native scored on a tough-angle shot from the bottom left faceoff circle for his fifth of the year.

That would be all the scoring the Badgers would do for the remainder of the game, though.

Michigan rattled off six unanswered tallied, which included a short-handed, empty-net goal at the end of the contest, to seal its sixth-straight victory. The Wolverine's winning streak currently ranks as the longest in the nation.

U of M's Justin Selman lit the lamp three times and added an assist to lead his team, while Kevin Schulze recorded a career-high three points (all assists) for Wisconsin. The performance was also Wisconsin's first three-point game of 2014-15.

Badgers netminder Joel Rumpel faced 38 shots, while Nagelvoort made 11 saves in his two periods of work.

UW was 3-for-7 with the man advantage compared to the Wolverine's 2-for-5 success rate. It was the first time the Badgers scored three times on the power play since going 3-for-6 on Jan. 6, 2012 against RIT.

Michigan's win was its first at the Kohl Center since Nov. 24, 2006, having lost four-straight in Madison.

The series finale is set for a 7 p.m. puck drop Saturday and can be seen on the Wisconsin Channel.
