SEATTLE, Wash. - Despite winning the first point of the match in doubles play, the Wisconsin men's tennis team was unable to overcome ETSU and eventually fell, 4-3, in its first match of the spring season.
The Badgers opened up the dual match by sweeping doubles play. The doubles team of Alexander Kokorev and Jakhongir Jalalov dispatched ETSU's Ismael Merino and Diego Nunez, 6-3.
The freshman team consisting of Josef Dodridge and Jose Maria Martin De Oliva Carranza defeated Rogerio Ribeiroand David Biosca by a score of 6-4.
The final doubles pair comprised of freshmen Lamar Remy and Darius Mackenzie did not finish their match against East Tennessee State's Sebastian Yllera and Conner Huertas Del Pino but were leading 6-5 at the time.
Although the Badgers started strong, they were unable to close out the match in singles play, dropping four of the six matches. A pair of freshmen led the way for the Badgers, picking up the two victories.
In their spring season debuts for UW, Dodridge defeated Yllera 7-6, 7-5, at No 5 singles while Remy earned his win on court 3 by a score of 4-6, 6-1, 6-4.
In a back-and-forth three-set contest, Jalalov fell to Ribeiro, 3-6, 6-2, 7-5. Mackenzie also battled into the third set, but was ultimately dropped by ETSU's Huertas, 4-6, 7-5, 5-7.
At No. 1 singles, Kokorev was defeated by a score of 6-7, 2-6. To round out singles play for the Badgers, Carranza fell to Merino, 3-6, 0-6.
The Badgers followed up their opening dual match with a contest versus Seattle University Saturday evening at 5 p.m.
