 Fast Facts
• The Badgers won with a team score of 20 points
• Six runners for UW crossed the line in 18:22 to help UW in the title

“I thought it went really well,” said senior Michael Van Voorhis. “We had a nice pack in front. We kind of all finished as a team and we finished with freshmen.”

Sam Penzenstadler of Loyola won the 6-kilometer race in 18 minutes, 16 seconds, but Wisconsin took the following five spots to win the team title.

The top five finishers for Wisconsin were Van Voorhis, sophomores Russell Sandvold, Malachy Schrobilgen and Joe McAsey and freshman Carl Hirsch as the quintet finished in 18:22. Senior Alex Hatz and unattached freshmen, Joe Hardy, Morgan McDonald and Tyson Miehe, also finished in 18:22.

“We had a lot of young freshmen having fun out there,” Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Mick Byrne said. “We had them being taken around by the hand by some of the older guys and that's what we wanted.  We wanted them to just feed off each other again and that whole tight team group and just enjoy this experience.”

“I think we have a lot of upside this year,” said Van Voorhis. “We had a lot of freshmen finish with us today. We had a good group of guys up there.”

The men’s cross country team races next on Sept. 20, at the Big Ten Preview in Iowa City, Iowa.
