MADISON, Wis. -- Thanks to a pair of top-10 finishes by Joe McAsey and Ryan Kromer, The No. 11 ranked Wisconsin men's cross country team took third at the Big Ten Preview on Saturday.
The Badgers competed on the Ashton Cross Country Course, which will host this year's Big Ten Championships. Wisconsin competed against No. 22 Michigan, Kansas State and the event's host, Iowa.
Michigan took first place with a total of 19 points, followed by Iowa with 50 points. Wisconsin earned 64 points, while Kansas State finished fourth with a total of 112 points.
"Today's meet gave us a chance to see a few of our younger guys compete in a uniform for the first time," Wisconsin Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Mick Byrne said. "It also gave us a chance to rest guys for future races.
"Right now, the most important thing for us is training and September has always been a heavy workload month."
McAsey, a sophomore, finished sixth overall and was first to cross the line for the Badgers with a time of 25 minutes, 15.61 seconds. Kromer, in only his second ever race for the Badgers, earned a ninth-place showing in 25:17.54.
Following one right after each other, Russell Sandvold finished at 25:36.51 and Sam Hacker at 25:38.48. Respectively, they finished third and fourth for the Badgers and 14th and 15th overall.
"Those four runners did a nice job for us today," Byrne said. "Once they get their racing legs under them, they will help us down the road."
Rounding out the top-five for Wisconsin was freshman Troy Smith. Smith finished in 26:28.32 placing 25th overall.
Freshman Cullin Burdett also ran for the Badgers, finishing 30th overall in 27:00.42.
Up next, UW will travel on Oct. 4 to Louisville, Kentucky, to compete in the Greater Louisville Classic.
