MADISON, Wis. -- The Wisconsin men's hockey team (0-8-1) earned its first point of the season Friday night, skating to a 1-1 overtime tie against Ferris State (7-6-1) at the Kohl Center.
Following 60 minutes of regulation time and a five-minute overtime period, Morgan Zulinick led the Badgers in what amounts to a practice shootout win, as he backhanded a shot through the five-hole of FSU goaltender CJ Motte.
[The shootout] was a dress rehearsal for when we play in the Big Ten," head coach Mike Eaves said. "That is another point for us.
"In the things that we've been going through, that is a little sliver of light for us. A tie and then a shootout win is a little sliver of light."
Fast Facts | • Wisconsin earned its first point of the season | • Ustaski is now tied for the team lead with two goals | • Joel Rumpel made 34 saves | |
UW net minder Joel Rumpel denied all three Bulldogs shootout attempts and made 34saves in the game, including five in overtime.
The senior made his best save on a breakaway in the second period.
Cameron Hughes skated with the puck around the right boards and across the blue line in the offensive zone. The Edmonton, Alberta, product fired a shot as he reached the middle of the ice which banked off a Ferris State player's shin pads, sending him the other way on a 1-on-0.
Rumpel came out of his net and tracked a backhand deke all the way to keep the game scoreless.
"Thanks goodness that Joel Rumpel was excellent tonight because he allowed us to get a tie and win in a shootout," Eaves remarked. "But, there was many underlying things that we didn't do well, so we had a little video session right away just to point those things out. To really be clear about what we are trying to do, what we are doing and what we look like we are doing."
For the first time this season, Wisconsin entered the third period in a scoreless tie.
Matt Ustaski gave the Badgers a lead minutes into the final frame, netting his second tally on Wisconsin's third successful power play of the year.
After receiving a perfect pass from Tim Davison along the left neutral-zone boards, Hughes skated toward the FSU goal mouth, putting a low shot on net.
The puck found its way through Motte's right pad, landing on the doorstep for Ustaski. The freshman backhanded the rebound over the goal line to give UW the advantage.
FSU entered the game 11th in the nation on the penalty kill and allowed just its sixth goal when playing down a man.
The Badgers played with the lead for just over five minutes before Andrew Dorantes knotted the score on a wrist shot from the right circle.
Ferris State nearly tallied again later in the third, but the goal was waved off following a short review by the officials.
A Bulldogs player stepped out from the left corner and tried to shovel the puck past Rumpel, taking out the Wisconsin goalie in the act.
The interference prevented the Swift Current, Saskatchewan, native from attempting to save the rebound left in front and gave the officials sufficient enough evidence to reverse the call on the ice.
FSU pressured the Badgers in the five minutes of extra time, nearly scoring during a scramble as time expired, but the Wisconsin defense remained tough to force a tie.
Kevin Schulze anchored the Badgers' back line, blocking a game-high seven shots. UW finished with 26 blocks--12 more than its opponent had.
Wisconsin only allowed two shots on three Ferris State man advantages, improving its penalty kill rate to 75.0 percent.
The Badgers look to take the series finale Saturday at the Kohl Center, as the puck drops at 8 p.m.
