GREEN BAY, Wis. -- A five-minute stretch in the first period proved to be the difference, as Northern Michigan scored two goals early on and kept the lead to defeat Wisconsin, 2-0, Friday at the Resch Center in Green Bay.
UW (0-3-0) goaltender Joel Rumpel did everything he could to keep his team in the game, as the senior made 26 saves.

After scoring a goal about five minutes into the contest and having it wiped off the board because of an interference penalty, Northern Michigan (1-0-0) made sure to keep its next goal on the score sheet, which came just over halfway into the first frame.
Shane Sooth won a faceoff to the right of Rumpel, putting the puck on the stick of Dominik Shine who was lined up atop the circle. The sophomore shifted right, weaving between an opening in the slot and rung a wrister off the right post and into the net to beat Rumpel.
The goal, which stemmed directly from a faceoff win, highlighted a larger trend in the game, as Northern Michigan won 33 of 54 faceoffs.
The Wildcats then connected on their first power play on a nifty, bang-bang play with less than six minutes remaining in the first.
Gerard Hanson retrieved the puck just below the Badgers’ goal line and skated with his eyes up, scanning the ice before sending a pass in front of the net. With no hesitation, Darren Nowick one-timed the feed into the cage, putting NMU on top by two.
Northern Michigan finished 1-for-3 on the man advantage, while UW was 0-for-5 on the night. The Badgers have yet to connect on the power play in 11 opportunities so far this season.
Wildcats net minder Mathias Dahlstrom made 18 saves in the win to secure his fourth career shutout.
The result moves the Badgers to 4-3-1 all-time at the Resch Center.
Wisconsin and Northern Michigan will battle in Game Two of the series Saturday at 7 p.m.
