MINNEAPOLIS -- That whole losing to Minnesota thing is so last decade.
The Wisconsin men's swimming and diving team proved times have changed, as the group improved to 3-0 on the season and defeated Minnesota for the first time in over a decade, 153.5-146.5, at the Minnesota Aquatic Center in Minneapolis on Friday night.
Leading in the statement win were Brett Pinfold and Drew teDuits, who each earned two individual victories and also helped the 400-yard medley relay team win. Not to be overlooked was Matt Hutchins, who set a personal record to win the 1000-yard freestyle and also claimed the 500-yard freestyle.
A quality meet across the board, the men won a total of 10 events in the battle of border rivals.
"I think this is a huge win for us," UW head coach Whitney Hite said. "The men remain unbeaten on the season and we had a lot of stars tonight. We got some big performances by a lot of different guys and that's what it takes. I'd argue this might be the best dual-meet victory in the program's history. This comes two weeks after we beat Arizona, which we hadn't done before. To do this back-to-back, it starts to legitimize us.
"This is a real good team and they're tough. I'm very proud of them and they represented Wisconsin very well."
teDuits teamed with Nick Schafer, Harrison Tran and Pinfold to earn a win in the 400 medley relay (3:17.96). The senior from Fitchburg, Wisconsin, then turned around and earned a pair of individual wins in the 200-yard backstroke (1:46.71) and 200-yard individual medley (1:50.18).
Claiming a pair of individual wins himself was Pinfold, who touched first in both the 100 (45.42) and 200 freestyle (1:39.34).
Schafer joined in and came out on top in a pair of events as well, winning the 100- (56.17) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:02.17).
In addition to Hutchins recording a personal-best time in the 1000 free (9:07.66), teammate Josh Anderson clocked in with his fastest time ever to finish third (9:28.41).
For the Wisconsin women, Ivy Martin led the way. The senior from Madison, Wisconsin, claimed individual wins in both the 50 (22.31) and 100 freestyle (49.54), while also placing second in the 100-yard butterfly (53.76). Martin joined with Aja Van Hout, Annie Tamblyn and Marissa Berg for a runner-up finish in the 200 freestyle relay.
Jenny Holtzen was another standout performer, earning second-place finishes in both the 500- (4:52.50) and 1000 freestyle (9:55.67), while also placing third in the 200-yard individual medley (2:06.95).
The Wisconsin women were defeated by Minnesota, however, 203-95.
"Jenny had a great meet and probably one of the best dual meets in her life," Hite said of the performance by the junior from Fayetteville, Arkansas. "We had some great performances. We'll remember this and this is something we're going to use to our advantage."
The Wisconsin swimming and diving program returns to action Nov. 7 when it travels to face California.
