ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Wisconsin men’s tennis team ended its run at the 2014 ITA Midwest Regionals Saturday in the second round of the singles main draw and doubles main draw.
Ohio State’s Ralf Steinbach, the fourth-seeded player in the tournament, defeated lone Badger Alexander Kokorev by a score of 6-2, 6-1.
In the second round of doubles action, John Zordani and Jose Maria Martin De Oliva Carranza were tripped up by Alex Petrone and Runhao Hua of Michigan, 8-2.
UW’s Josef Dodridge and Jakhongir Jalalov narrowly missed advancing to the Round of 16. Dodridge and Jalalov had their tournament run ended by Hunter Callahan and Chris Diaz from Ohio State, 8-7 (3).
Aside from action in the main draw of both singles and doubles, three Badgers earned victories in consolation play.
Freshman Jose Martin Carranza bounced back from his first round defeat by recording a win vs. Alp Horoz of Northwestern, 4-6, 6-2, 10-6.
Dodridge offset his doubles disappointment after claiming a victory against Notre Dame’s Ken Sabacinski in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1.
Rounding out the Wisconsin consolation wins was Jalalov, who dispatched Urh Domitar from Illinois State in a back-and-forth match, 6-3, 1-6, 11-9.
Zordani was defeated by Marquette’s Daniel Fernandez by a score of 6-3, 6-2. Lamar Remy also recorded a loss after facing Joe VanMeter of Cleveland State, 7-6 (4), 6-1.
The Badgers will conclude their fall season on the final weekend in October with the Big Ten Singles Tournament in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Wisconsin men’s tennis team began action in the main singles draw of the 2014 ITA Midwest Regionals Friday evening and advanced just one player, Alexander Kokorev, to the second round of the tournament.
Kokorev dispatched Northwestern’s Alberto Zanotti in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5, and his win stood as the sole Wisconsin singles victory on the day.
Freshman Lamar Remy fell to Jared Hiltzik, the tournament’s top-seeded singles player from Illinois. Remy was defeated by a score of 6-2, 6-3.
Fellow newcomer Josef Dodridge also suffered a first round defeat versus the No. 9 seed Kevin Metka from Ohio State, 6-3, 6-4.
Michael Sinha’s singles run came to an end after dropping the match to Michigan State’s Gijs Linders, 6-2, 6-3.
The final Badger to see singles action was Jakhongir Jalalov, who played a competitive match, but eventually lost to Mihir Kumar from Northwestern, 7-6 (3), 6-1.
Kokorev will continue singles action in the second round of the Midwest Regionals Saturday morning at 8 a.m. vs. Ralf Steinbach of Ohio State. John Zordani, Jose Maria Martin De Oliva Carranza, Josef Dodridge and Jakhongir Jalalov will also continue in the second round of doubles play Saturday afternoon.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- In day two of action at the 2014 ITA Midwest Regionals the Wisconsin men’s tennis team sent a pair of doubles teams to the second round and saw senior
Michael Sinha earn a bid to the singles main draw.
Sinha dropped a competitive match to Youngstown State’s Remi Chancerel Friday morning in the qualifying round of 16 by a score of 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. Despite losing, Sinha was fortunate enough to receive a bid to the main singles draw of the tournament.
The doubles pair of John Zordani and Jose Maria Martin De Oliva Carranza moved onto the second round of doubles action after claiming a victory versus Tom Hjertonsson and Matt Lynch from Northern Illinois, 8-2.
Earning the second doubles victory for UW was the pair of Josef Dodridge and Jakhongir Jalalov. Dodridge and Jalalov easily defeated Northern Illinois’ Carlos Manzanas and Austin Russell, 8-1.
Although it was a close match, Wisconsin’s Alexander Kokorev and Lamar Remy were tripped up by Dave Bacalla and Chase Hamilton of Valparaiso by a score of 8-6.
Freshman Darius Mackenzie and Sinha were also defeated in doubles play by Ohio State’s Matt Mendez and Riley Reist, 8-4.
Sinha and teammates Dodridge, Jalalov, Kokorev and Remy will continue play in the singles main draw Friday evening. The Badgers will also resume doubles action Saturday, along with the second round play of the singles main draw.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Wisconsin men’s tennis team continued its fall season as it began the 2014 ITA Midwest Regional Championships with qualifying action on Thursday. Senior Michael Sinha highlighted the Badgers’ opening day efforts, advancing to the third round of the qualifying bracket in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
In one of the first matches of the opening round, Sinha defeated Rowan Isaaks from the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. Sinha battled back from a first-set defeat to win, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4. Sinha, who did not participate in singles play during Wisconsin’s earlier fall action, moved on to face Notre Dame’s Wyatt McCoy in round two. Sinha would knock off the No. 2 seeded McCoy in one of the tightest matches of the day, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.
Now one of 16 remaining in the qualifying bracket, Sinha will take on Remi Chancerel of Youngstown State on Friday morning.
Sophomore John Zordani also claimed a first-round victory for Wisconsin, rallying from a first-set loss to knock off UIC’s Christopher Cole, 4-6, 7-5, 6-1. Zordani then met Marquette’s Andre Romanello in the second round of qualifying and pushed the match to a third set before falling, 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-2.
After a 3-0 effort at the Milwaukee Tennis Classic in September, Zordani is now 4-1 on the fall season.
Next up for the Badgers was freshman Jose Maria Martin De Oliva Carranza, who suffered a first-round setback to Daniel Cardenas of IPFW, 7-6 (5), 6-3.
In consolation play, Carranza rebounded from his first round defeat and dispatched of Michael Savaglio from Valparaiso, 6-3, 4-6, 10-5.
UW newcomer Darius Mackenzie was unable to finish his opening-round match, retiring to Green Bay’s Florian Kraenzler after falling behind 5-0 in the first set.
Badgers Lamar Remy, Alexander Kokorev, Josef Dodridge and Jakhongir Jalalov will see their first action in the singles main bracket. And in addition, the team will begin tournament doubles play.
