MADISON, Wis. – The No. 13 Wisconsin men’s hockey team was unable to ring in the new year with a win, dropping its first home game of the season to Alaska-Anchorage (9-8-2, 5-7-2 WCHA) after a comeback bid fell just short, 3-2.
The game started on an ominous note for the Badgers (10-6-1, 2-2-0 B1G), as they ceded a goal to the Seawolves just 37 seconds into the contest. Coming after UAA blocked a Wisconsin shot, Wisconsin goalie Landon Peterson (Oregon, Wis.) stoned Brett Carmeron’s shot at the net, but the Seawolf was able to corral his own rebound behind the net and find Scott Allen in the slot who finished into the open net.

Wisconsin would even the score off a power-play goal by Tyler Barnes (Eagan, Minn.) early in the second period, after the senior knocked a Michael Mersch (Park Ridge, Ill.) rebound out of the air and into the UAA net.
But the Badgers subsequently dug themselves a hole that proved too deep to climb out of, as numerous penalties and a relentless Anchorage attack led to a pair of Seawolves’ goals and a 3-1 deficit for the Badgers heading into the final frame.
Despite the long odds, Wisconsin made a late charge when Mark Zengerle (Rochester, N.Y.) trimmed the margin to 3-2. UW’s second power-play tally of the night came with 5:28 to go. The senior gained possession of a rebounding Barnes’ shot.
The Badgers were unable to net an equalizer, however, despite several scoring chances in the closing minutes.
Peterson took the loss for the Wisconsin, stopping 15 of 18 shots on the night. Joel Rumpel (Swift Current, Saskatchewan) stopped all 11 shots he saw for UW in relief, while UAA’s Chris Kamal stopped 26 of 28 Wisconsin attempts.
Both teams found the back of the net on the power play, with UW brushing off its recent struggles on the man advantage to muster two scores in four chances. The Seawolves scored once on five opportunities.
The two teams return to the ice on Saturday at 7 p.m. for the series finale between the old WCHA foes. The game will be televised on Fox Sports Wisconsin alternate.
