MADISON, Wis. -- Following the University of Wisconsin women’s soccer teams’ unbeaten weekend on the road, a pair of defensive standouts earned Big Ten weekly awards.
Junior goalkeeper Genevieve Richard earned Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week honors, while Kylie Schwarz earned the conference’s freshman of the week award, the Big Ten announced on Monday.
Richard recorded her second-consecutive Big Ten road shutout, her third of the season, during Sunday’s 2-0 win at Michigan State.
Richard tallied nine saves this weekend, including six against Michigan State. She came one save shy of her career high (7) on Sunday.
The Saint-Bruno, Quebec, native remains unbeaten (7-0-1) in net this season and has tallied 39 saves through 10 matches. Richard is the first UW player to earn Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week honors since 2011 when Big Ten Goalkeeper of the Year, Michele Dalton, garnered the award.
Schwarz has anchored a back line that has posted two-straight shutouts, both in Big Ten play.
The Plymouth, Minn., product has been vital to UW’s defense in all three shutouts this season and is the only freshman defender to start every match for Wisconsin this year.
Schwarz is just the fourth Badgers player to be named Big Ten Freshman of the Week since the conference debuted the honor in 2009, joining Rose Lavelle, who garnered the honor earlier this season, as well as Cara Walls (2011) and Monica Lam-Feist (2009).
