BOSTON -- The No. 8 Wisconsin men's cross country squad, facing ranked competition for the first time this season, finished fourth at the Coast-to-Coast Battle in Beantown on Friday at Franklin Park.
The Badgers earned 88 points, while No. 12 Oregon won the meet with a score of 22 points. No. 9 Syracuse was second earning 69 points, while No. 25 Providence was third with 81 points.
Junior Michael Van Voorhis led the charge for the Badgers, netting a top-10 performance by finishing the 8-kilometer course in 24:23. Freshman Malachy Schrobilgen was close behind, clocking in at 24.27 to claim 12th, while senior Alex Brill was 13th in 24.27.
Junior Jake Erschen was 26th, crossing the line in 25:02, and fellow junior Alex Hatz rounded out the scoring, clocking in at 25:06 to claim 29th.
Seniors Jacob Naylor and Drew Shields ran times of 25:27 and 25:37 to finish 48th and 54th, respectively.

"This was our first real test of the year," UW head coach Mick Byrne said. "A few of our guys stepped up their game today, notably VanVoorhis, Malachy and Brill. Obviously, it is still early and we have some work to do. We have to stay focused on our plan and keep believing in the Badger process."
The Oregon freshmen tandem of Edward Cheserek and Jake Leingang finished first and second, respectively, in their first collegiate races. Cheserek and Leingang both clocked times of 24:11.
The Badgers will have a break before they compete at the Wisconsin adidas Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 19 at the Zimmer Championship Course.
