MADISON, Wis. -- Behind three-point performances from redshirt-sophomore Kodee Williams and freshman Kinley McNicoll, the University of Wisconsin women's soccer team defeated the South Dakota State Jackrabbits, 5-0, posting its second-straight shutout to open the 2012 season.
"One thing we haven't done in the past as a program is being consistent in two games over a weekend," head coach Paula Wilkins said. "I've been telling them how challenging it is to play two games in a matter of three days, especially when you're starting four freshmen.
"South Dakota State has always done very well as a program, so we took the time out to talk about what we should expect from them and what we would need to do to overcome a tough team like this. I couldn't be any prouder of how we performed today."

After 22 minutes of action, the Badgers drew first blood, as senior Lindsey Johnson found McNicoll on a cross. Following Johnson's throw-in, the ball was deflected back to the senior, who served it just outside the box. McNicoll collected the ball 25 yards out and netted it into the right corner, tallying her first career goal.
Following a couple of good looks for the Badgers, Williams extended the lead to 2-0 on a flick pass from senior Joana Bielefeld. Freshman Lexi Peterson found Bielefeld at the top of the box and after winning the ball, Bielefeld served it to Williams who easily found the net for the score.
Both McNicoll and Williams also assisted on two of the Badgers' three second-half goals. In the 56th minute, McNicoll found redshirt-junior Paige Adams just inside the box for the header. Following Cara Walls' 10th career goal, Williams and redshirt-senior Erin Jacobsen hooked up for UW's fifth and final goal of the afternoon.
"We definitely didn't expect to win like this," Williams said. "We always want to show the other teams respect and come out with a fight every time. We want to believe that every game is a fight and that we need to play hard to win and I think we did that.
"The scoreboard showed that we believe in our team and I think we have a very good season ahead of us because of that."
Despite the quick turnaround following Friday's win, the Badgers showed a lot of aggression, outshooting the Jackrabbits 23-5, including 10 shots on goal. UW saw seven corner kick opportunities on the afternoon, while South Dakota State only attempted one the entire 90 minutes.
Both senior Lauren Gunderson and Olivia Hoff saw time in net for the Badgers on Sunday, with Gunderson making the save on the lone shot on goal for the Jackrabbits.
"To be able to get a bunch of people on the field and get experience this early in the season is really important for us," Wilkins said. "I saw some players off the bench do a really good job and performances like this will make our team really competitive moving forward."
"It's always nice to be at home and get two wins in front of your fans," Wilkins added.
UW returns home next weekend for its third and final game of its three-game home stand to kick off the 2012 season. The Badgers welcome Loyola-Chicago to the McClimon Soccer Complex on Sunday, Aug. 26, at 1 p.m. CT.
