MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin men’s tennis team lost its fifth-straight Big Ten match Friday afternoon, falling, 7-0, to No. 3 Ohio State at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium.
The Buckeyes dominated doubles, losing a total of six games en route to wins at all three positions. At No. 1, Alexander Kostanov and Petr Satral dropped an 8-0 decision to No. 1-ranked Chase Buchanan and Blaz Rola.
No. 39 Devin McCarthy and Ille Van Engelen beat Rod Carey and Fredrik Ask, 8-5 at No. 2, and at No. 3 doubles, Peter Kobelt and Connor Smith defeated Alex Robles and Quinton Vega, 8-1.
OSU continued its strong play in singles to complete the sweep over the Badgers for the second straight year. At No. 1 singles No. 5 Rola got things going by defeating Ask, 6-0, 6-1.
Carey was the next Badger to fall as he lost 6-2, 6-2 to No. 12 Chase Buchanan. Vega played a strong second set, but it was too little too late as he lost to No. 69 Devin McCarthy, 6-1, 6-4.
Satral pushed Van Engelen in both sets 6-4, 6-4 at No. 3 singles, but he couldn’t find the points he needed late in the two sets to help him get the victory. At No. 6 singles Andy Quirk fell to Grafton native Nelson Vick, 6-2, 6-2.
Kostanov was the only Badger to win a set Friday, but after winning the first set, 7-5, he lost the second set, 7-6 (7-4), and the match tiebreaker 12-10 to Connor Smith.
Wisconsin will have the chance to rebound from this match at home on Sunday against Penn State at noon.
