MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin men’s tennis team kicked off its final weekend of the regular season by defeating Iowa, 5-2, Friday afternoon at the Nielsen Tennis Center.

The win over the Hawkeyes moves the Badgers into ninth place and gives UW a chance to pass Nebraska for eighth place when the two schools face off on Sunday.

“It was our last conference match at home, and I think it was great to be able to play your last home match and go out with a win,” Wisconsin head coach Greg Van Emburgh said.

After dropping the doubles point in its previous two matches, Wisconsin was able to secure the opening point against Iowa.

At No. 2 doubles Rod Carey and Alexander Kostanov fell to Jonas Dierckz and Matt Hagan, 8-1. Wisconsin evened the doubles when Alex Robles and Quinton Vega topped Will Vasos and Tom Mroziewicz, 8-3.

With the doubles split, it came down to No. 1 doubles where Billy Bertha and Fredrik Ask clinch the doubles point by scoring an 8-5 victory over Garret Dunn and Michael Swank.

Using the momentum from doubles, Bertha dropped just one game to Swank in singles play with a 6-1, 6-0 win, giving UW a 2-0 lead.

Wisconsin took a 3-0 lead when Carey defeated Vasos at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 7-5.

The Hawkeyes got on the board after Dunn put together a 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 victory over Kostanov, but Petr Satral clinched the match for UW. He topped Joey White 7-6 (7-5) in the first set and then won the second set with one break, 6-4.

At No. 1 singles, Ask snapped his losing streak by defeating Hagan, 7-6 (7-5), 7-5, in a tight two-set match.

Vega’s match against Dierckz was the only match to go into three sets. Vega won the first set 7-6 (11-9), but dropped the second set, 6-2, and the match tiebreaker, 10-6.

The Badgers are away Sunday for their last Big Ten regular season match. Wisconsin faces Nebraska at noon on Sunday.
