BEMIDJI, Minn. -- A second-period offensive explosion propelled the Wisconsin men's hockey team (14-15-2, 9-14-2 WCHA) to its second road win of the season Friday at Sanford Center with a 4-2 decision over Bemidji State (15-15-3, 9-13-3 WCHA).

Trailing 1-0 after a late first-period goal from the Beavers, sophomore Frankie Simonelli (Bensenville, Ill.) scored one of the stranger goals this season 3:57 into the second period to tie the game. Simonelli took a shot from the point that went wide and hit the boards before the puck ricocheted off BSU goalie Dan Bakala's leg and into the goal. Freshman Joseph LaBate (Eagan, Minn.) earned an assist on the play.

The Badgers took the lead less than three minute later when junior Justin Schultz (West Kelowna, B.C.) scored his 14th of the season on a wrist shot from the point to put Wisconsin up 2-1. Sophomore Michael Mersch (Park Ridge, Ill.) assisted the score.

 Fast Facts
• Friday's win was the Badger's second on the road this season
• The win came for the Badgers in their first ever trip to Bemidji
Justin Schultz's score gave him 14 on the season and 38 in his career, now just three short of second-most ever for a UW defenseman.
Mark Zengerle now has 32 assists this season, third most in the nation

Wisconsin continued to fight hard through the remainder of the second period--down to the final seconds. That hard work paid off when Mersch again got into the offensive spirit, this time scoring with just 13.2 second remaining in the period.

Sophomore Mark Zengerle (Rochester, N.Y.) put a pass across to Tyler Barnes (Eagan, Minn.) who then sent the puck back to Mersch who rocketed the eventual game-winner into the net.

After being outshot 11-7 in the first period, the Badgers stormed back to outshoot the Beavers 13-8 in the second and take a 3-1 lead.

Bemidji State scored in the opening minutes of the third period on a stuff play at the left post. The goal was reviewed, but the review equipment failed and the goal was called good. The Beavers then thought they tied the game with 11:54 left in the game on a rebound, but the potential equalizer was waved off by the officials as the whistle blew though and the Badgers maintained their 3-2 lead.

Junior John Ramage (St. Louis) scored his third goal of the season with 33.9 seconds left in the game on an empty net to stretch the Wisconsin lead to 4-2. Zengerle picked up his second assist of the night on the score and now has 32 assists this season, the third best mark in the nation.

Freshman Landon Peterson (Oregon, Wis.) won his second consecutive game in goal for the Badgers Friday stopping 28 shots.

The Badgers, who entered the weekend with the 12th-best power play in the country went 0-for-2 on the man advantage. Meanwhile, Wisconsin held the Beavers 0-for-5 on the power play.

Bemidji outshot the Badgers 11-6 in the third period and 30-26 overall.

Wisconsin looks for its first road sweep of the season Saturday night when its squares off with the Beavers at 7 p.m.
