The first period went in familiar fashion. For the fourth time in the five straight games between Wisconsin and Colorado College (21-17-3, 15-14-2 WCHA), neither team scored in the first period. Wisconsin controlled much of the play in the CC end, and saw one slapshot by defenseman Justin Schultz (West Kelowna, B.C.) hit the post, but the period ended with no scoring.
The second period continued in the same fashion, with the Badgers controlling play despite limited scoring chances. Finally, UW broke through late in the period, gaining a 4-on-3 power play, and taking advantage of the opportunity. Craig Smith (Madison, Wis.) lit the lamp, scoring on a one-timer from the right faceoff circle. Schultz and Jake Gardiner (Minnetonka, Minn.) recorded assists on the goal. The goal came at 17:22 of the second period, and gave Wisconsin a 1-0 lead.
Wisconsin looked to preserve that lead into the third period, as goaltender Brett Bennett (Williamsville, N.Y.) stopped numerous Tiger chances. In the final 11 minutes, two power-play goals by CC made the difference in the game.
With 10:33 left, Colorado College evened the score. Nick Dineen tallied for the Tigers, knocking home a rebound on a slap shot from the point.
Then, just under four minutes late, the Tigers took the lead on another power-play goal. Stephen Schultz got the eventual game-winner for CC. The first shot attempt was blocked, but Schultz picked up the loose puck and scored. Wisconsin tried to mount a charge in the final 6:39 to answer the Tiger goal, but Joe Howe keep the Badgers out of the net and Wisconsin was defeated 2-1.
The Badgers outshot the Tigers 34-26 on the game. UW was 1-for-4 on the power play, while CC was 2-for-4.
Brett Bennett took the loss for Wisconsin, stopping 24 shots but falling to 5-5-3. Joe Howe was the victor for Colorado College, making 33 saves and improving to 16-13-2.
Colorado College advances to the WCHA Final Five, which will be held March 17-19 in St. Paul, Minn. They join North Dakota, Denver, Minnesota Duluth, Alaska Anchorage, and Bemidji State.
