ST. CLOUD, Minn. -- In a crucial WCHA series against St. Cloud State, Wisconsin (19-12-4, 11-11-3 WCHA) lost the opening game 4-2 to the Huskies (13-15-5, 9-12-4 WCHA).
With the Badgers in a fierce battle to earn home ice in the WCHA playoffs, Wisconsin was unable to snap a winless streak that now spans five games (0-4-1).
The first period ended scoreless, with St. Cloud State taking a 9-4 shot advantage into the locker room.

The Huskies opened the scoring in the second period, en route to a three goal period. Their first goal came at 7:43 of the period, when Travis Novak redirected in a shot from the outside left hash mark. Wisconsin had a chance to tie the game right afterwards, but Jordy Murray's (Fairibault, Minn.) shot deflected off the post.
St. Cloud State then added the next two tallies. In a scramble in front of the Badger goal, Jordy Christian knocked the puck in to make it 2-0. Then, just 76 seconds later, Garret Roe scored on a two-on-one to increase the Huskie lead to 3-0.
UW goaltender Brett Bennett (Williamsville, N.Y.) made a spectacular save to hold the lead there. Bennett made a diving save through the air that stuffed an excellent Huskie chance after going across the crease.
In the third period, the Badgers attempted to find a spark to initiate a comeback. Just 39 seconds into the period, defenseman Justin Schultz (West Kelowna, B.C.) made an individual effort to get the Badgers on the board. Schultz started the play at the Wisconsin blue line, making a one-man rush through the St. Cloud defense before finishing for his 17th goal of the season.
St. Cloud State answered back however to extend their lead to 4-1. Garrett Roe scored his second goal of the night, getting a breakaway on a UW delayed penalty and finishing it with a backhander.
Wisconsin had one last push in them. Jordy Murray lit the lamp late in the game for his team-leading 18th goal of the season, tipping in a Podge Turnbull (Hayward, Wis.) shot for the second Badger goal. That was all Wisconsin could produce, and they fell 4-2.
Wisconsin was outshot by St. Cloud State 35-27 for the game. UW went 1-for-2 on the power play chance, while the Huskies were 0-for-5.
Brett Bennett took the loss for Wisconsin, falling to 5-3-3 despite making 31 saves. Mike Lee got the win for St. Cloud, improving to 11-11-4 by stopping 25 shots.
The Badger face off with the Huskies again Saturday night in St. Cloud. The puck drops at 7 p.m. (CT).
