MADISON, Wis. -- In an important conference game against border rival Minnesota, the Badgers (19-11-3, 11-10-2 WCHA) lost 5-2 in front of 14, 315 fans at the Kohl Center.

After Wisconsin tied the game early in the second period, Minnesota responded with two quick goals, and Wisconsin could not take advantage of their offensive opportunities in the loss.

 Fast Facts
• Wisconsin's Kohl Center-record nine game home winning streak was snapped.
Justin Schultz and Jake Gardiner had multi-point games. Gardiner had a goal and an assist, while Schultz had two assists.
• The Badgers' ten power play chances is a season high.

The Golden Gophers (13-12-4, 10-10-3 WCHA) got on the board first, scoring 15:22 into the first period. Mike Hoeffel's shot for Minnesota deflected off a Badger and just slowly looped over UW goalie Scott Gudmandson's (Sherwood Park, Alberta) left shoulder.

The Badgers came out of the locker room strong in the second period. Starting the period on the power play, they made it count with a goal by Jake Gardiner (Minnetonka, Minn.). Craig Smith (Madison, Wis.) rocketed a one-timer off the goal post, and Gardiner grabbed the puck and finished for the goal.

The goal came just 33 seconds into the period, and the Badger momentum seemed to be building when they went right back onto the power play and had some chances at the net. However, a Wisconsin penalty caused the teams to skate four aside, and the Gophers seized the opportunity.

Jacob Cepis scored for Minnesota, scoring a backhander top shelf. The goal stood after a review and gave Minnesota a 2-1 lead just 70 seconds after the Badgers had tied it. Then, Minnesota went on the power play and scored again. Taylor Matson scored for the Gophers, converting a rebound at the side of the net 3:31 into the period to extend the lead to 3-1 in Minnesota's favor.

Before the period ended, Matson scored again to bring the Minnesota lead to 4-1. He fired in a wrist shot at 18:40 of the 2nd period for his second goal of the night.

Minnesota added a power-play goal in the third period to extend the lead to 5-1 when Patrick White finished off a one-timer from a cross-ice feed. The goal came at 11:08 of the third period.

The Badgers made it a 5-2 game with a power-play goal with just 31 seconds remaining. While on a 5-on-3 advantage, Jordy Murray (Fairibault, Minn.) scored his team-leading 17th goal of the season. Gardiner and Justin Schultz (West Kelowna, B.C.) earned the assists.

The Badgers had multiple chances on offense, but were unable to find the net enough to keep pace. Michael Mersch (Park Ridge, Ill.), John Ramage (St. Louis) and Smith combined for four hit posts, while Podge Turnbull (Hayward, Wis.), Gardiner and Tyler Barnes (Eagan, Minn.) each had breakaways stopped or interrupted by penalties. UW recorded 14 shots on the power play, including 11 in the final period alone, and finished 2-for-10 with the man advantage.

Scott Gudmandson took the loss, making 27 saves but falling to 14-9-1. Kent Patterson got the win for the Golden Gophers, stopping 36 shots to improve to 11-7-4. Wisconsin outshot Minnesota 38-32, but allowed the Gophers to convert three of their six power-play chances.

The two teams face off again tomorrow night, with the Badgers looking for revenge. The puck drops at 8 p.m. (CT). The game airs live on FSN North and FSN Wisconsin.
