OMAHA, Neb. -- After dropping Friday night's game to Nebraska Omaha, the Badgers (19-10-3, 11-9-2 WCHA) entered Saturday looking for revenge. However, a late rally fell short, and Wisconsin lost to the Mavericks (18-10-2, 14-6-2 WCHA) by a score of 4-3.

The Mavericks scored the game's first goal in the first period. UNO got a 2-on-1 in the offensive zone, and Brock Montpetit finished the play into an open side of the Badger net. The goal gave Nebraska Omaha a 1-0 lead at 9:06 of the first stanza.

Wisconsin answered to tie the game in the final minute of the third period. Sean Dolan (St. Louis) took the puck into the offensive zone on a 2-on-1 with Derek Lee (North Vancouver, B.C.). Dolan's pass was broken up, but Jake Gardiner (Minnetonka, Minn.) scooped up the loose puck and lifted it into the net to even the game.

After Gardiner's goal at 19:32, the Badgers had another good chance right before the horn. Mark Zengerle (Rochester, N.Y.) put the puck into the net, but the goal was waived off after it was ruled he hit it with a high stick. The first period ended even at 1-1.

In the second period, the Badgers had an opportunity to take the lead, with 1:15 of a 5-on-3 advantage. However, they were unable to score, and UNO took control of the game.

At 10:46 of the second period, Matt Ambroz gave the Mavericks a lead they never relinquished. Johnnie Searfoss took a slapshot from the top of the faceoff circle, and Scott Gudmandson (Sherwood Park, Alberta) made a kick save. The rebound went to Ambroz in the slot, and he fired it in for a 2-1 lead.

Craig Smith (Madison, Wis.) had a great chance for the Badgers right after the goal with UW shorthanded. Smith took the puck down the ice on a breakaway, but UNO's John Faulkner made a glove save.

The Mavericks added to their lead when Alex Hudson scored a power play goal. Hudson put home a rebound from the top of the crease to extend the lead to 3-1. Then in the third period, Matt Ambroz scored his second goal of the game to extend UNO's lead to 4-1.

The Badgers cut into the lead, breaking out of a power play funk with two power play goals. First, Jordy Murray (Faribault, Minn.) scored on the man advantage. Murray tipped a point shot from Justin Schultz (West Kelowna, B.C.) to bring UW within two goals at 4-2.

The Badgers made things interesting late, when Craig Smith scored on a one-timer at 16:20 of the third period. Smith received the pass and rifled a shot in over the goaltenders left shoulder. The power-play goal cut the Badger deficit to one, but that was the end of the Badger scoring.

Wisconsin outshot Nebraska Omaha 30-26 for the game. UW was 2-for-6 on the power play, while UNO was 1-for-5 on the advantage.

Scott Gudmandson was saddled with the loss for the Badgers, stopping 22 shots but falling to 14-8-1 on the year. John Faulkner made 27 saves, and improved to 17-9-2.

Gardiner and Smith each recorded one goal and one assist for the Badgers. Justin Schultz added two assists.

Next weekend the Badgers are back at the Kohl Center to take on border rival Minnesota. The puck drops on Friday night at 7 p.m. (CT), with Saturday's contest an 8 p.m. start.
