Redwood City, Calif. – The No. 1 Wisconsin women’s lightweight rowing team concluded competition at the Stanford Invitational with victories over Santa Clara’s openweight varsity eight and Princeton’s lightweight second varsity eight on Sunday morning.
“I'm definitely excited about the way the team is progressing so far,” head coach Erik Miller reported. “Combined with the awesome performance of our novice team this weekend at the Knecht Cup, it shows that the lightweight program is in a good position to have a successful spring racing season. The entire lightweight squad has done an amazing job the year, and the hard work and dedication is beginning to pay off.”
Wisconsin’s lightweight first varsity eight posted a convincing victory over Santa Clara’s openweight first varsity eight. The Badgers completed the course in 7:07.7 while Santa Clara finished in 7:52.3.
“We used this race as an opportunity to work on the parts of the race we struggled with during yesterday's races,” Miller said. “The boat did a great job in tricky conditions to row a full 2,000-meter piece and easily defeated SC. It was a good progression of races, and I'm happy with the way the team is progressing.”
Against Princeton’s lightweight second varsity eight, UW’s second varsity eight was also victorious. Wisconsin clocked a 7:46.3 while Princeton finished the 2,000-meter course in 8:05.6.
“The second varsity eight had a solid race and was able to make some good improvements from yesterday's outings,” Miller reported. “We really had only been on the water for nine days this spring before coming out here to race, so each trip down the course has been an improvement. I'm excited to get back to Madison and work on getting the team even quicker. There is still a lot of work left to do.”
The Badgers’ next competition is slated for May 1-2 when UW takes on Radcliffe and MIT in Boston.
