GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- The No. 2-ranked Wisconsin women's hockey team opened up its eight-game road trip with two straight wins as the Badgers completed a sweep of No. 8 North Dakota on Sunday with a 6-2 win at Ralph Engelstad Arena.
Eleven Badgers recorded points on Sunday as UW (14-2-0, 10-2-0 WCHA) erupted in the second period, scoring four goals to cruise past the Fighting Sioux (8-6-2, 7-5-2 WCHA) after falling behind 1-0.
Marking the first time she has made back-to-back starts on consecutive days, freshman Alex Rigsby (Delafield, Wis.) stopped 19 shots en route to her 10th win of the year. Sophomore UND goaltender Jorid Dagfinrud moves to 4-5-0, allowing six goals on 35 shots.
There was no lack of action this afternoon, even a scoreless first period saw six total penalties, four on the Badgers.
North Dakota sophomore Jocelyne Lamoureux opened up the scoring, putting the Fighting Sioux up 1-0 at the 5:48 mark of the second period. The Badgers seemed to use the goal in their favor, as the team came right out and began attacking the puck. With momentum starting to shift in the Badgers' favor, freshman Madison Packer (Birmingham, Mich.) was called for a holding penalty. UW was dominant in the next two minutes of play, allowing just two shots by the Fighting Sioux.
The Badgers tied the game on a goal coming off the stick of freshman Brittany Ammerman (River Vale, N.J.). With Ammerman in front of the net, fellow freshman Kelly Jaminski (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.) took a shot from the point that bounced off the pads of Dagfinrud right as Ammerman was knocked to the ground. From her knees, Ammerman was able to slide the puck behind her own body and into the open net for the goal. The Badger offense then went to work. Just 37 seconds went by before sophomore Brianna Decker (Dousman, Wis.) was able to gain control in the neutral zone, carry the puck in, and fire a shot past Dagfinrud to give the Badgers their first lead of the afternoon at 2-1.
At the 16:01 mark in the second period, the Badgers had a 5-on-3 opportunity for 46 seconds but were unable to capitalize on the power play. Just seven seconds after North Dakota was back at even strength, senior Kelly Nash (Bonita, Calif.) got the puck in the slot and buried it for her first goal of the season. With the Badgers up 3-1, senior Meghan Duggan (Danvers, Mass.) hustled to gain control of a lead pass in the neutral zone from fellow senior Anne Dronen (Chaska, Minn.). Duggan reached the puck at the blue line and after some nice stick work, was able to beat the UND goalkeeper to increase UW's lead to 4-1 and extend her point streak to 12 games.
Shortly into the third period, UW again found itself on the power play, and junior Brooke Ammerman (River Vale, N.J.) was able to find the back of the net for the team's only power play goal of the weekend. Senior Mallory Deluce (London, Ontario) passed the puck to junior Brittany Haverstock (Hammonds Plains, Nova Scotia), who ripped a shot from the point. Haverstocks' shot bounced right to a waiting Ammerman, who threw the puck into the open net for Wisconsin's fifth-straight unanswered goal.
North Dakota sophomore Monique Lamoureux-Kolls was able to stop the bleeding momentarily, as she recorded an unassisted goal at the 6:53 mark of the third period to make it 5-2. However, the Badgers continued to play strong and with 6:16 left to play in the game, Packer recorded the first goal of her Badger career off a pass from sophomore Saige Pacholok (Edmonton, Alberta).
The Badgers continue their road trip next weekend as the team travels to St. Cloud, Minn. to take on St. Cloud State. Both Friday and Saturday's games are slated to begin at 2:00 p.m. CT.
