MADISON, Wis. - Freshman Frankie Simonelli (Bensenville, Ill.) recorded three points and senior Podge Turnbull (Hayward, Wis.) scored two goals as the No. 15 Wisconsin men's hockey team skated to a 5-1 victory over Massachusetts Thursday night at the Kohl Center.
Eleven Badgers recorded points, including four different goal-scorers. Turnbull's two tallies included the game-winner for Wisconsin (11-7-3, 6-6-2 WCHA), and freshman Tyler Barnes (Eagan, Minn.) joined Simonelli in registering a pair of assists.
Senior goaltender Scott Gudmandson (Sherwood Park, Alberta) made 18 saves and improved to 8-5-1 on the year, while Jeff Teglia took the loss for Massachusetts (3-8-3, 2-4-3 HEA). Teglia made 15 saves in the first two periods, and senior Paul Dainton made 14 stops in the third. The Badgers outshot the Minutemen 34-19 in the game.
Wisconsin took an early 1-0 lead at the 1:16 mark of the first period. Simonelli fired a shot from the blue line, and senior Patrick Johnson (Madison, Wis.) tipped it past Teglia to put UW on the board. Sophomore Derek Lee (North Vancouver, B.C.) picked up the second assist on the play.
The Badgers extended their lead to 2-0 on Turnbull's first goal with 3:32 remaining in the opening frame. Barnes' attempted wrap-around failed, but Turnbull buried the loose puck for his sixth of the season.
The teams combined for four goals in the second period as redshirt sophomore Ryan Little (Fond du Lac, Wis.) scored his fourth goal of the season at the 2:40 mark to give Wisconsin a 3-0 lead. Sophomore Justin Schultz (West Kelowna, B.C.) and freshman Sean Little (Fond du Lac, Wis.) assisted on the play.
UMass responded with a goal from T.J. Syner at 6:59 of the frame, cutting the Badgers' lead to two goals. However, Simonelli netted a power-play tally at 9:53 before Turnbull slammed the door on the 5-1 victory with his second goal of the night at 14:05.
The teams skated to a scoreless third period, but both teams had opportunities on the power play. Wisconsin was 1-for-5 with the man advantage for the game and held the Minutemen scoreless on four power-play opportunities. UMass killed a 5-on-3 advantage for the Badgers along with a five-minute major when Chase Langeraap was charged with contact to the head early in the third period.
With the win, Wisconsin extends its winning streak to a season-best four games. The Badgers look to complete the sweep of the Minutemen in a 7 p.m. New Year's Eve game Friday night at the Kohl Center.
