DENVER, Colo. -- Senior goaltender Scott Gudmandson made 36 saves to backstop No. 14 Wisconsin men's hockey (3-2-1, 0-1-1 WCHA) to a 2-2 tie with No. 11 Denver (2-2-2, 1-0-1 WCHA) at Magness Arena on Saturday.
The Badgers took an early lead when freshman forward Mark Zengerle (Rochester, Minn.) stole a Denver clear and walked down the slot. His shot beat DU goaltender Sam Brittain at 4:17 of the first period for his second of the season and a 1-0 UW lead.
The goal gives Zengerle points in his first six games as a Badger.
Senior captain Sean Dolan (St. Louis) made it 2-0 Badgers with a one-time on the rush. Patrick Johnson (Madison, Wis.), who was a shot-blocker extraordinaire on the weekend, hit Ryan Little (Fond du Lac, Wis.), who continued the play to Dolan for the one-time from the left side. Dolan's goal, at 8:17 of the second period, was also his second of the season.
Denver closed the gap at 8:18 of the third frame. Kyle Ostrow picked up the puck after Jesse Martin won a faceoff deep in the UW end, and fired a wrist shot past Gudmandson to make it 2-1.
Ostrow then struck against at 15:16, turning a scramble in front into a goal with a shot that bounced off a Badger defenseman and found space under Gudmandson.
That would finish the scoring in a cleanly played contest. Both teams failed on three power-play attempts and just six penalties were called in the contest.
Gudmandson's 36-save performance in the tie makes him 1-2-1 on the season. Brittain for DU sits at 1-1-2 after his 25-save game.
The Badgers return home for Halloween weekend to take on unbeaten Michigan Tech (3-0-2) in the UW's WCHA home-opening weekend. The Badgers skate Friday and Saturday, Oct. 29-30 at 7 p.m., both nights.
